' ‘The fact is, as we are informed, that a mem- ber of the Government took an attive interest in the man and tried to get a place of shelter for him before he attracted the attention of the two charitable gentlemen whose names the Patriot mextions. The Patriot disingenuously leaves out sight the fact that the man has a disease which is loathsome to all his fellows ; and thisaccounts for the difficulty the mem- ber of the Government, and the others who took an interest in him, experienced in finding a place of shelter. The Poor House is mani- festly not a proper place for such @ man , and it is disgraceful to this community that no house or place of retreat has been provided, in which poor diseased outcasts might be kept apart aud cared for. Tus best place to get Cigars, Tobaccos, Pi and Smokers’ Kequisites, is at the Apothecarics’ Hall, DesBrisay’s Corner. He afterwards commanded the Natal Native Pioneers at the Lower Tugela from February to the end of June, except during the month ‘of April, when he was attached to the third Batallion 69th Rifles at the relief of Isthowi and Ginginleouho. If ene half of what the correspondent says be true, the casc should be enquired into by the Inspector of Schools. Keferring to one case of harsh tre tment he says:—‘‘At one time the little boy was placed standing on the stove with a bask t placed on his head and a bougi: in each hand, an object of ridicule to botu teacher and scholars. ‘The chili, who is ofa Mervous temperament, was frightened almost beyond control of himself, and when by the eryivg and leading of his sister he was taken down from |iis position, he was seized with a twitching in his face which has gone all over his body, and has proved, I beheve, to be St. Vitus’s Dance; caused by cold to his feet {which were bare), and fright, which would bring such on stronger persons, much less a weak-nervei child. ee Weather Bulletin.
