At the previous electi~n the par- ties stood 46 Liberals, eight Conservatives, while the returns so tar received indicate that with an increased number of consti- tuencies the Liberals have carri`cd _ probably 49 of the 59 seats. There can be no doubt that the f`ci°eigii vote is largely responsible for this result and com- sold at fabulous figures as breeders, but the purchaser should be guided by the ac- no account b_e___gni§1ed_ _i__n_tQ_the beliegthat all fox pelts 'are'_goin"g"»f*‘to-“bring “ $1,100. There are as many kinds of black foxes as there are of black horses and their values vary just as widel_v. There are of course those who are content to own an inferior black horse and the same privilege is open tothe fox men. A mistake made by man) ty they looked for in the fox was_’its co. lour and they paid the price-of the highest quality just for the colour. These foxes are still cumbering many ranches and while their skins may bring a fairly profitable return~thev will never bring the highest figures and should neither be sold nor bought as high quality breeders. Pedigree and fur value should always be assured and this can be done only through the regis- tration of pedigrees through a representa- tive body like the Fox Breeders’ Associa- tion. Another lesson is the manner of sell- ing. Mr. McClure knew what he had to sell, knew its value, and knew where and when to put it on the market. He succee- ded remarkably when the conditions of the market and the general disorganization biiietl with the slacker vote may fully ex- plain the situation. Saskatchewan one;consequent on the war are taken into con- oi' the new provinces of Canada which has_si_derat1on. The_fox-business of this _pro- been populated and developed to a very vince, now that it has come to a straight, large extent by a foreign population. Ac- cording to the last census more than one third of the total population were foreign- ers from Europe and Asia. So strong is the Germaii and Austrian influence that short- ly after the outbreak of' the war it com- pelled the Provincial Government to issuer an order forbidding the singing of patrio-F , tic songs by school children, as it was offen- sive to parents of foreign nationality. One; stock raising, pelt value basis can be suc- cessfully carried on only bv having the pelts handled by a man who thoroughly understands the business, understands pelt values, knows how to grade and match them. and knows and studies the markets and their requirements. Individual selling and peddling from time to time, from mar- ket to market and through middlemen and peddlefrs can never result in anything but teacher, rather than submit to such d_is-'irregularity and dissatisfaction and poor honourable and unpat-riotic restrictionl ""threw up his school and the correspondence prices. It is up to the fox ranchers to get more connected with the ___ina_tt_er_vvas l_au_d___oyer|and more together. to organize themselves in the local legislature at the instance o_f the Conservative opposition. While the dom,-inating influence of the foreigners is great the patriotism fit” ' the iC'aiiadiaii'po= pulation is correspondingly intense. The, voluntary recruiting shows that thirty one per cent. of the men of military age in Saskatchewan and Manitoba joined the co- lours, which is the second highest of any province in_Canada. Thus. it will be seen that foreigners and slackers had practical- ly everything to themselves in the wav of selecting representatives in _ Tuesday’s election. This fact by the way also ex- p`lains'the attitude of Mr. Frank Oliver, who, while professing to be an out and out conscriptionist, seconded the amendment calling for a referendum 'on the subject. In his constituency alone there are said to be over 2 000 foreign votes to cater for. ' ’ As, the Patriot sapiently remarks in its yesterday’s issue, “this election proyes that the Conscription Bill is not adding of Canada, for obvious reasons () l`()\ l’ll0\l’l‘]( 'l"5 The possibilities in the fox business ar well exemplified in a summing up of th anything to Tory prestige in that sectioir 1915. , _ _ __ . e e on his recent visit to the United States fur markets where he disposed of a quantity of Prince Edward Island fur pelts. ' As our readers know Mr. McClure, ac~ Edward Island Fox Breeders’ Association, went to New York, St. Louis and other Am- erican fur centres taking with him a num- . »_ber.,of. fox pelts which had been given him "bv ranchers throughout the province to .idispose of. The pelts were a mixed_ lot, many of them-probably the majority- i_-iwere culls, the pelts of animals whose own- ,..,or_s for various reasons thought it best to if' et rid of. Few. if any,'of the ranchers lffiéillod their best stock, these being retained “las breeders, so that the lot handled by Mr. '""<'"`McClure Tcould in no _way be regarded as 120 be reminded that in lille Great' WHY, when-men died by tens of thousands for li- berty, he was the conscious or unconscious the best pelts the Island could produce. In summing up the results of his sales. - Mr. McClure divided the pelts sold into three groups, Numbers One, Two and Three. The Number Ones, of which there each; the Number Twos of which there were 20 pelts sold for over $18 000 or an and to stand together.
