A Servicable Silo. A Vermont farmer says, in Mirror and Farmer: ‘ I built silo No. 1 last year aud silo No. 2 this. Both are in my barn and are built of wood, well timbered and double boarded, with paper between; the boards inside are planed and matched. used two jack screws to press the ensilage in. I put two press beams overhead to set the screw caps against. 10x12 feet, and 24 from the high beams to the bottom of the cellar. The bottom is covered with flat stones and cemented. Capacity, sixty-five tons each. I planted the Southern white flint, Western yellow and small aweet corn. I like the white flint best. Last year I raised fifteen tons per acre; this year but twelve} tons; the drought was very severe this year, Last year it cost me to raise the ensilage or fodder seventy cents per ton, and seventy-two cents tocut and put it in the This year I planted with my champion seed-drill and used phosphate in the drill; the drill will plant one gcre per hour and put in the phosphate at the same time. I do the cuitivating with a horse, use a smoothing harrow as soon as the corn is out of the ground for a little time; then run the cultivator as often as neces- sary, and the weeds will get so discouraged that they wont amount to anything. My eusilage cost to raise this year sixty cents per ton, and te cut and put into the silo $1 per ton, making the cost $1.60 per ton. | consider two tons of ensilage equal to one ten of best timothy hay. [ feed at 6 a. m. with hay, about eight pounds to an ordinary animal; at 8 a. m. I turn out and water the animals; then I give twenty-three pounds of ensilage, three pounds of barley straw and two quarts of shorts. I do not feed again till 4 p. m., and then repeat the last named feed, My cattle look well, feel well and are well; the cows give more and better milk, and a better quality of butter is made than when fed on the best hay and meal. I have not fed it to horses. Store pigs do well on it. Two-year-olds_ will grow fat on ensilage and shorts. I consider ensilage the best and cheapest food for all kinds of farm stock.” VM SC a silo, A sineie box of Mack’s Magnetic .Medi- cine will prove to any sufferer frcm nervous prostration or weakness of the generative organs, that it is the best and cheapest medicine ever so!d for this class of disease.
