S. lcebrea ker The prospect of our new car ferry steam- I being ready this year is so slim as to be in- visible except with powerful political glasses. We may as well reconcile ourselves to the fact that Ottawa has failed us again, and that wordy promises to the contrary notwithstand- ing, construction of the new boat has not been proceeding as rapidly as was possible. If the holdup, as alleged, has been due to failure on the part of the sub-contractors for the electrical equipment, why was not this work distributed elsewhere? The whole ferry could long ago have been built in the United States, if the Government had wanted to have it done that II)’. Worth rioting in this connection is the achievement of one American shipyard in turn- ing out a ten million dollar icebreaker — the Mackinaw —— for the U. S. Coast Guard Serv- ice. An exchange of January 21 gives an iii- teresting story, datclined Chicago, of the first trip of this powerful vessel in opening the Great Lakes, formerly icelocked for four months every winter, to year round shipping. The Mackinaw can break through eight feet of ice-—the thickest the Lakes have to offer-- with ease. She is powered by six Diescl and two electric engines developing io,o0o liorse- power, and her construction was started long after we had lost our car ferry “Charlotte- town" and were vainly imploring Ottawa to get us another. It seems to have taken us as long to get the plans of our new ferry ready, as it did the American authorities to complete the whole job for the Great Lakes let-vice. Australia's "Dominion Day" The war has given us in Prince Edward Island and other parts of Canada the privilege of meeting many fine young men of the Royal Australian Air Force. It is of more than passing interest, therefore, to note that this is their Foundation Day. Australia as a nation was cradled in the Colony of New South Wales. It was in 1788 Governor Phillip sailed into Bot- any Bay with eleven ships and a personnel of one thousand souls. Colonization spread over the continent from favored harbors located around the coast. The great southern island continent is approximately the size of the United States and nearly as large as Canada. Before the war it had six and a half million people, 97 per cent of whom were of British stock. Privileges of self government were granted to New South Wales in i855, to Tas- mania, Victoria, and South Australia in Janu- ary, i901, nearly 34 years later than the Can- adian Confederation. The 26th of January is an annual holiday identical in character with otir own Dominion Day. The island continent "down under” today celebrates its forty-fourth birthday. Before the war Australia was a tremendous producer of sheep, cattle, wheat and dairy pro- ducts. As in other parts of the Empire. hcr farmers have redoubled their efforts in essen- tial food production since then. The wartime sacrifices of Australia are also noteworthy. Her casualties, as to Nov. 3o last. were 84,861 as against Canadals 78,935. In the last war she suffered “$14,366 casualties. l Why Money Foi’ Books? The I. O. D. E. are working assiduously to make their book campaign the success it de- serves. This is not a. new movement, it has been carried on practically since the first year of the war, but hitherto gifts of books only were asked. .Expcrience has proved that though the response was generous, not enough books of the right kind were received, and adequate coverage for the bulk of the needy was not possible. It has to be lioriie in mind that mairv, alas, very many, of the enlisted lads have not been read- ers in the past, and are thus not in a position to select reading matter within their comprehension and grasp for real enjoyment. With money at their disposal the I. O. D. E. can purchase books of the right sort to suit all tastes and condi- tions, and thus make their good offices to the wounded and shut ins, not to mention the vast horde with spare time, otherwise on their hands, all the more effective and appreciated. The Book Campaign deserves hearty support from those who appreciate reading and have a dol- lar to spare that others may share similar enjoy- ment. R. C.A.T=T-N~ot Bgng Sacrapped According to Col. Colin Gibson, Acting Air Minister, the R. C. A. F. is not being demobil- iced, only the surplus ground crew and staff ac- cumulated as the result of the Commonwealth Training Scheme. Almost 15o schools of various types were operating at the peak of the Air Training Plan, and at one time in Canada men were being frtinetl who could he expected to be required as much as two years later. Because of the training program's success it was possible in the spring of 1944 to begin a gradual process of‘ contraction.
