Strip CANAL.-TIIO important Ship Canal which is to unite Lake Superior with Lake Michigan, will soon be coinnienr.-ad. The surveys tor its location have been completed. and the ground has been foutid quiieas favourable for the easy and a estly coiistruction of the work as was oxpected. overxil routes have been surveyed, which will enable the legislature of Michigan and contractors to obtain a perfect unrlerstaiidirig of the whole subject. The canal will be a fraction less than a mile in length. ' law of Congress provides that the locks shall be zit least 250 feet long, and 60 feet wide. and the Michigan legislature has power to enlarge the dimensiuiis. Wlion oom- pletcd. this canal will enable steamers of the argest class to run from Buffalo to the hood waters of iliclakc without any transhipmsnts—sn im- provement that will quadrtipls the trade of this immense lalrc in less than two years. Urtirso S-rn-so EXPEDITION T0 run Paciric.— The expedition frtling out by our Government for the Pacific will sail from Norfolk, Virginia, about the lot of January next. This expedition will _consist of, lat. The sloop-of-war Vinoennao, Commander Cadwaladsr Ringgold, with one hun- dred and seventy-fiva men. 2d. The steam propellsr John Hancock, Lieutenant John Rodgers com- rnrinding, with sixty the tilt. A tender, to be called “ The Pilot,” with about twenty uisn. ob'ects. as we learn from a long article in tho National Inlclligmcr-r, will be to survey portionsof the China and Japan seas, the route between China and California, and the North Pacific Ocean in the region of Bebriug’s Straits. It may prob- ably also tisccnd the Sea of Tartory, to make some examinations needed for the advantageous pros- ecution of commercial enterprises in those com- paratively unknown waters. Congress has appro- priated 3125.000 for the Expedition. lts prepa- ration and equipment is most complete. In are particular, it will be thoroughly prepared for tho work before it. The vessels will all be peculiarly adapted for it in their construction and equipment. All the late and well-established impiovsinonts in the machinery of steamers have been introduced into one of the vessels; and tbs boats have boon constructsd in the best manner, with s ecisl ro- forence to the contemplated surveys. he most eminent medical slrill in the servico will bo dctailod and scientific lien. in every department, will be selected, with reference to their high roputstion and eminent suitsblencss for the duties in view. The crews also will consist alone ofyoung, healthy vigorous, and efficieiit seamen, and their clothing and food have been particularly attcndsd to. It will probably be the most complete expedition for scientific purposes which has ever been sent out by any gnverttiiient; and its progress will be watched w' i much interest. The command of the expedition has been given to Ct-mtltondor Cadwaladcr Rinrgold, whose qualifications and character afford an ample guarnnteo that suocoss will attend his eflbrts. and tltdt his labours will prove worthy the sdiniraiiori and gratitude of his countrymen. The Sandwich Islands will, fora time, be the princi al rendezvous of tho vessels of this, Expedition ; ut it is not unlikely that its arrival at Japan w” so tiritsd -asto make it available in facilitating the cflorts of Commodore Parry, whose fleet will tarry a ooiqldorabls timo ‘in the vicinity of those Islands. ~ MAIN!
