This great structure is in a. charming park-like setting and its mammoth size has awarded its city the distinction of being the convention spot of the west coast. It mirrors in majestic splendor in the quiet waters of Rainbow Lagoon sheltered from the ocean by a 38 foot lsemi-circular Rain- bow Pier. This Long Beach Auditorium is well known to many over the whole world as the setting for "The Old Fashioned Revival Hour" by Rev. Charles E. Fuller. The music, including the quartets. was most inspiring and, during the singing of ”l-leavenly sunshine" each person shook hands with a neighbor. The beautiful sandy beaches are ideal. and the Pike- the city's amusement zone - oc- cupies a mile stretch along the ocean. There are many large de- partment slores and supermarkets in the city. In the new development of Lake- wood Park is the world's largest rural store (May Company) with marvelous parking facilities. The eucalyptus trees. the palms, tree roscs, rhododendrons. and many other colorful flowers give a vision of beauty in every direction. This City is rich from its oil wells and thousands of oil wells decor- ate Signal Hill. u a A delightful holiday was spent at the ranch home of Mr, and Mrs. (J. W. Many different kinds of fruit trees were on the ranch and I had the pleasure of picking avoca- dos. oranges and lemons. From here I was taken to the famous Knottii Berry Farm and Ghost Town in Buena Park. This most interesting dramatic panorama. with words and music. showing the hardships of early pioneering is presented in Ghost Town Hall. In driving from Long Beach for approximately one hundred miles south along the Coast, we saw many interesting places among which were Ft. MacArthur; Sun- set Beach; Huntlnirton Beach; Newport, famous for its water- sport activities with yachts, sail boats and other crafts. Laguna Beach -- a vacationland of Pic- turesque hills and famous for its oerramic output, Capistrano, San Clemente - I beach resort, Camp Pendleton - military exercises in action, Oceanside - famous for surf and deep sea fishing, Del Mar Race Track and La. Jolla, We drove along the Silver strand to Coronado, a. peninsula, then crossed on the ferry to San Diego. This city was built around the 1400 acre Balboa Park. site of two world-famed Expositions with bea- utiful Spanish Renalasance build- ings. This Park has one of the largest and most interesting woos with ani- mals and birds from all parts of the world. Here also is the lar- gest outdoor pipe organ in the world and we were privileged to hear Royal A. Brown in I. recit- al. The romantic story of "R0- mpna" heroine of I. book writ- ten by Helen Hunt Jackson is annually commemorated, and we were shown the rrinrriage place of Romoria to her Indian sweetheart in the Mission Chapel in Old Town. the birthplace of Califor- nia. There we viewed many fascinating relics of Mexican and Spariie" life. The grape vine a- bout the arbor grew from a cut- ting taken from the grave of Nap- oleon at St. Helena and is always green. t 0 a From the top of Mt Helix is a wonderful view of the city, In the shopping district are many large department stores as Mar- st.on's, Whitncy's, Walker's, etc. At Nationalcity we watched ninety-five bands of 4000 music students, iii- ciuding the majorettes. in color- ful uniforms parade lri competit- ion. A visit to historic Point Lorna. where Cabrllio. distinguished Port- ugese navigator in the service of Spain, landed in 1542 and discover- ed the Coast of California, was most educational. A National Mon- ument was erected to his memory at this point. In the Greenwood Memorial Park e 20.000 crema- tions in the Ma oleum and 6.000 entombed. This huge building has been erected from many different kinds of marble, as Italian. Col- orado, Alaskan and terrazano and the beautiful statuary within isi chiefly from Italy and Spain. Many of the sanctuaries have special names, as Peace, Prayer. Memories. Over the crematorium of Harold Bell Wright, a noted author, are the words "And the desert shall rejoice and blossom as the rose." I spent some time in Chula Vista where I visited the Little Chapel. This renowned lpoet left behind him the request that if his writings . ould ever be published in book orm, the poem "Crossing the Bar” must not be omitted. The indoor gardens with cages of sing- ing birds iend an air of enchant- merit, while the grounds without, with rose trellis' and other beauti- ful flowers are picturesque. Over three hundred weddings are per- formed here yearly. 0 0 0 As Chula Vista is only eight miles from the Mexican border. I had the privilege of touring there on two occasions.
