A strong expression | of regret that the works under constructwn have not been prosecuted more vigorously and of hope that no more time be unneces- sarily lost in carrying out the Terms of Confede:a ion, is what is now required. That could have been given last evening by a large and influential meeting in ten minutes, after the Exhibition business was c mclu led, and would, we believe, have had more weight with the Ministry than columns of empty declamation on a subject in which no question is invelved,— Epiror EXAMINER. | >. — “There are many ways of killing a dog, besides choking him with butter.” Sin,—The attitude of covert hostility to the proposed Dominion Exhibition, assumed by one, if not two, of the speakers at last night’s meeting, affords a good illustration of the vld saw quoted above. It is quite true there are grave difficulties in the way, but why exaggerate these difficulties as was done by Mr. Laird last evening. Ch’town, Dec. 19, 1883. _— - > — Souris Notes. Three or four Nova Scotia schooners, one American, are loading potatoes and oats for the Halifax and St. John markets The shippers are Mathew McLean & Co., and Macdonald, Macdonald & Co. The bark ‘Isobel’ is wind-bound here during the past ten days. She has about 30,000 bushels of oats for the French market. Some difficulty was experienced in getting a crew to man her. Some as soon as articled left nothing but old rags to mark the place where they had once slum bered. Notwithstanding the fact that three able-bodied men were keeping vigil, two of the A. B’s(?) managed to show a clean pair of heels. Trains alone acknowledge Standard Time in this part of the Province. Town and country generally are hostile to the change. The old time will be adhered to as usual becanse little sympathy is felt for the adoption of the new.
