' As is well known C1 the difficulty which
fdivided Messrs Bowell and Haggart
reached its climax in January 1896: when
'seven members of the Cabinet, Messrs
‘Haggart, Montague, Foster. Hibbert
Tupper, Dickey and Ives, desired Sir 1
lMackenzie Bowell to surrender the Pre-
; miership, which he refused. They there-
_upon resigned, thus creating u. serious
icrisis, the more serious from the factthat ,
' the session of Parliament had just began.
After remaining out for eleven daysa_
compromise was effected and the resigu~
ed Ministers resumed their places in the ‘
Cabinet, on the condition, as Mr. Haggart 1
3now states, that Sir Mackenzie Bowell ‘
should retire from the Premiership with- f
in four months. This he did on April 27th
1896. ‘
Sir Mackenzie Bowell, while he remains
as strong a Conservative as before, has by 
no means forgiven the colleagues who _
deposed him, and apparently retains a _
‘ strong feeling against those from his own _
province, amongst whom Mi. Haggart ‘
was aleadingspirit. The opportunity has '
now been opened by which without i
severing himself from his party he can 
oppose Mr. Haggarl. in hiselection. No _
Conservative convention has beenheld in
South Lanark since 1,882, it being taken
for granted that Mr. Haggart was the
choice of the party. But now a section of
the party opposed to Mr. Haggart contend
that a convention. should be called, and
failing that, have nominated Dr. Preston
as an independent Conservative. He is-
supported by Senahor McLaren,a very
_wealthy lumber operator, and now Sir
_ Mackenzie Bowell has publicly advocated
Dr. Pfes_ton’s claims to support against
