HASZARDS GAZETTE, Mason 5. y. I -DELIIIUI TIIIINS. Few of those who have read in the news- papers!’ the verdict of a Coroner's inquest upon the body of some unfortunate son or daughter of intemperence “ died ddelmll lrcutens, ” know aught of the dreadful, the hellish malady described by these signifi- cant words. If one’s reason rclnI|I_I Ill!- clouded, he may bear extreme painwitlioirt flinching, he may sustain Wltli ortilude the bereavement, b death, of those who WON dear to him as his own existence; he may be steeped to the lips in vet-ty, and have to sulI'er the contumely the world, still If his mind retain its sanity and fortitude, he will recover his serenity and composure. But in the complaint called delirium trrmrnr there is such a blending of the unearthly with the pains of life, that a novice, in the hands of those as ignorant as himsclf,_has but a very small chance of recovering. Death is obnoxious in most of its forms, but in delirium lreineirs it is horrible and appal- in . ilcliriusi (remain usually attacks those who have been engaged in a short course of reckless dissipation, and have boon aud- denly ohliged to discontinue the stimulants to which they had accustomed themselves, without an opportunity of “tapertn nolf” as the phrase goes, or who are so b inded and lost in the maze into which they have plunged themselves, as to continue drinking when the system is unable to support the unnatural excitement to which it has been subjected. \ _ The first symptoms generally consist of extreme nervousness, and dissatisfaction, and a horror of some dreadful, impending evil, a dread of having committed some hi- deous crime against one’s friends, or soa- ety at large. The victim feels wretched and miserable until he has partaken of a remedy of “a hair of the dog that bit him,” suggested by some “old hands.” A fe of these hairs judiciously administered at intervals might elfect a cure. But, unfor- tunately, the sufferer, finding immediate temporary relief, continues to indulge until reason is all but overturned, while_ an indestructible weakfulnen remains. Night after night the victim tries to sleep, but finds it impossible. He is like the thirsty soul of mythology, whose lips the water touched, while he could not drink. The victim feels sleepy and tries hard to sleep, but the brain is in too great excitement to permit of repose. _ Unless a strong opiate be taken, and it is frequently dangerous to take one, this state of weakfulness continues for three or four days until the mind and body are completely exhausted. Then follows the second stage of the disease in which no illusion in nature can be more horrible. The victim falls into a kind of slumber surrounded by grotesque and monstrous animals who crawl over and aroun 'm, and endeavour to crush or devour him. If he awalres alfrighted, the animals disap- pear, andare succeeded by unhuman fi urea and coutenances grinnin and mocking atthe unfortunate inebriate. f ‘be now in his des- pair, try to keep awake, the figures become voices suggesting to him all manner of blas- phemy, and urging him on to self-destruction. Such is the horror of these, that he again has recourse to sleep, to shut out his tormen- ters. Alas ! fresh troubles await him. Thousands of fiends in shapes diversified, try to tear him to pieces, or be is in the midst of ponderous machinery, the irregular movements of which seem certain of crush- in him to death. it is in one or other of the states sf of the second stage that ihe victom, if not carefully watched, commits self-destruction to escape from the horrors which surround him. One night’s sound sleep, and bracing tonics re- move the disease. To procure this sleep, the victom’s friends should have recourse to a physician familiar with the disease, and in whose honor and ability they have confidence We might write a volume on this subject. We believe, however, that we have said enough to show that Temperance in all things is best. Tninos -ro an rouirn Ou'i'.—Naturc is not exhausted. Within her fertile bosom there may be thousands of substances yet unknown as, precious as the only recently found gutta percha. To doubt this, would be to repu- diate the most logical inference atforded by the whole history of the earth. Corn and the grape excepted, nearly all our staples in vegetable food are of comparatively modern discovery. Society had a long existence without tea, coffee, cotton, cocoa, sugar and potatoes. Who shall say, there is not a more nutritious plant than the sugar cane, afiner root than the potato, a more useful tree than the cotton? Buried wealth lies every- where in the bowels of the earth, which needs but the true divining rod of organized action for its discovery.—.Rtlieiicrnii. It was a judicious resolution of a father, as well as a most pleesirl compliment to his wife, when, on being a ed what he intended to do with his girls, he replied: " Iintend to apprentice them all to their excellent mother, that they me learn the art of improving time, and be fitte to become, like her, wives, mo- thers, and heads of families, and useful mem- bers of society-” It has been ascribed to the Queen; that, on asking {lie Duke we suppose on a wet day)whatboots he he on, and being answer- ed, “ The people call them Wellingtons," she exclaimed, “ What an absurdity ! where, I should like to know, will they find a pair of Wellingtons?" Tacitus tells us, that in his time the specta- tors in public theatres were obliged to stand durin the representation, that they in‘ lit not, i accommodated with seats, botcm ed to waste whole days in idle amusements. A gentleman recommends the same plea to be adopted at all public dinners, that persons may drink, no longer than they can dead. ' PROSPEI-‘US 0!’ TI!
