C. Lloyd, E. C. In the Chair. After singing the 100th Psalm, and pray- er being olfered up, the Chairman opene the meeting with the operations of the Society and the general interests of the Church, in which he referred to ‘some ob- jections made against the Soc|_°')’. and pointed out the practical benelit_it has al- ready been the means of affording to the several Church missions in the Island; alter which he called on the Secretary to read the annual report. The report having been read, and the Treasurer's account passed, in which it was shewn, that there was an increase of at least £16 above the annual subscriptions of last year, it was moved by Captain Orlebiir, and seconded by W. Cundall; Resolved, That the Report now read be adopted and printed under the direction of the committee. Moved, by the Rev. R. Roach, and seconded by H. Haszard, Esq; Resolved, That this meeting desires to return thanks to Aliniglity God for the tem- poral and spiritual blessing's he has voucli- safed to this Island, and to the empire at large. Moved, by his \Voi-ship the Mayor and seconded by Chas. Palmer, Esq. Resolved, That this ineetiiig desires to record its sense of grateful obligation to those valuable Church Societies. S. G. I". P., and Col, Cli.. illl(l'SClI., Soc., which have liberally assisted the people of this Colony in upholding the interests, and maintaining: the Scripttiral principles of the united Chureli of England and Ireland. Moved by Rev. I). Fitzgei-altl, and seconded by Rev. R Roach; Resolved, That this meeting thankfully acknowledges the valuable assistance and ready co-opcratioii of the Ludies’Branch of this Society. On motion, the following persons, being members of this Society, were appointed the E.\'ecntive coininittec for the ensuing year, VV. Cundall, Theo. Deslirisay, Capt. Orlebnr, R. Hutchinson, H. Hiiszard, Chas. Palmer, 'l‘hos. Desbrisay, jun., George Owen, Hon. Jos. Hensley, G. \V. DeBlois, '1‘. B. Treinaiii, H. Stamper, John Longwortb, Thos. Essery, John Gates, John Hobbs, l)r. Kaye. J. Aldous, Jiis. Easton, John Hall, John lludson, Thos. Beer, John Tivcedie, Dr. Bell, John Has- zard, \Vm. Reid, Donald Palmer, Jas. Pidgcon, \Vin. Cousins. It was then moved, that the Rev. C. Lloyd do leave the Chair, and that Mr. Hutchinson be called thereto, on which a vote oftliaiiks was given to the Chairman for his ellicicrit conduct in the Chair. The Doxology was then sung, and the meeting disinissed with the accustomed benediction. VVe regretted, that the wetness of the early part of the evening, and the state of the roads prevented many of the members of the Church from being present. but we were glad to perceive an increased desire to- wards advancing the interests ofthe Society and making its objects more generally known on the part of those who iittende . On the whole from the interesting nature ofthe Report rcad, the increase ofthe Socie- ty’s funds during the past year and the deter- mination rniiuifested on the part of the - steady members of the Church to make giis Society, which is the native Church ociety of the Island, an instrument for good in the people generally, we augur favourably for the coming year. (For llaszard’s Gazette.) On the 18th inst., the Public Tea at St. Eleanor's for raising funds to aid in the com- letion of the Parsonage. was most numerous- l)yattended, and the expression of kindly feel- ing manifested by the various denominations in this locality was significantly expressive of their desire to promote the personal comfort of the resident Clergyman. It was a gratifying sight to witness so much unanimity as reviiiled which reminded us of the spirit whic should pervade Christian coni- iiiuiiities. P. and the French to have little or none; and the The tables were most liberally and sumptu- ously so plied through the indelati able ex- ertions o the Ladies, who spared ncit or labor nor e_xperise in making ample provision for the occasion. There were several large iced cakes contri- buted by hidies who had not taken it part in the proceedings; these with some others were sold during the evening. and realized with the Tea, the handsome sum of £33 ls 9d, the largest amount we believe ever taken on ii. similar 00- casion at St, Eleanor's. The meeting separated at an early hour, and if we mightjudge from the many smiling faces, we should say. that all were highly pleased with the treat alfordcd them. The greatest praise is due to the Ladies for the liberal and tasteful manner with which they sup lied their tables with an abundance of goo things, and they must have been grateful in seeing so many happily brought together to remote an object in which they are so deeply interested. ' LETTER FRHM THE CRIMEA. The following letter from Color Sergeant, J. Billings, 38th Regiment, to his fatlier-iii-law Ser t. M‘Kiniion, I-’rincetown Road, we have been kindly allowed to publish; tlieso letters will be read with interest by every one in the Island who takes an interest in the War in the East. And who does not? Camp before Scbastopol, ; IUIII Seplciulicr, I855. [ Dear Father; I am happy to inform you, that Sebastopol is at last in the hands of the Allied Powers At 12 p in. on the 8th iiist.. the English a.ttii.el;ed tho Reilan Ilattery; the French, the .\Ialakholl', not expecting to take the 'I‘o\\'n, \\‘llt‘Il the Rus- sians saw our plan of attack, they drew a great number of their men out ol' the .\Ialakhotl‘ and sent them into the Redan, thus causing the English to have a. double force to contend with, consequence was, the i\l:ilakliolI' was easily taken by the French, and tho Eiiglisli were twice repulsed from the Redzin. But, bctivuen II and I2 o'clock at night, Stli lllitilllt, we took it again, the Russian.-' seeing this. set to work to sink their ships, which they had I't‘i|liy pluggd for that purpose, they then set tire to the town which burnt for three days; their mines then began to explode, but luck ly for us they did not have the intended cll'cet, tor \‘cr_\ few ofour men were linrt by the freiiur-nt ex- plosions that took place. long after we took their two main Batteries and the town 2 after destroying all they could. they rcii-catcd to tilt‘ north side of the Ilar-hour, where they -still remain, and froni what we can see of their movements, they intend to defend the north side, as they lia.vc done the south. Fort Cori- stantine wliic. coniinands the mouth of the llurbonr, is still in the hands of the enerny,, but will not be so long, for our llect is now? engaged against it. nml alriady shook its vcryl foundation, there is still a very strong force of the Russians hovering about our rear, but to- day the Iliglihind Brigade have received order- to hold themselves in readiness to rnnreli after them to either give them battle, or cut oil‘ their retreat. so by the time you receive this, I think the Crimcii will be all our own, Our loss in killed and wounded and missing is great, but not so much so, as might be expected, con- sidering the disadvantrige and superior numbers that we had to contend with; I cannot tell you the exact number that we 't\'t5 lost in this affair. for no body hero secure to l:noiv, though its reported, that the l*}n;;lis|r lost about three thousand ; if so, Scbastopol was dearly bought. We are likely to rernain here all winter, but not without winter quartcrs,as we were last winter, as \ve_hii.ve the town; the Rus-iuns will have to -do without winter quarters this winter, turn about is fair play. There are ii. great number of magnificent buildings in the town, and though they have had a feiv of our shot and shell put through them, they can with it little troulilo be made good quarters of for the approaching winter. We were inspected yes- terday for that purpose, at least we think it's for that, but we are going to take up quarters in Sebastopol or follow the enemy, I cannot tell, for information regarding our movements is kept as secret as possible, in consequence of so many spies being about our camp. Several of our rcgirncats have already taken up quarters in the Town ofsebzistopol, and others are pre- paring to o in. our Slippers are repairing the uildings tor our reception. I cannot describe to you the ruinous appearance that the town resents.and the stench ofit, [can assure you, is very disagreeable. C O I C I O O C I remain, your alfectionatc son J. BILLINOS. <1-O->—- — We have had the usual Colonial and American Mails this week, but no further news from England. There has been a severe lire in‘St. John's Ne ivfoundland, by which it is said 200 hundred hoiises have been burned. Adetailed account will be found in another column.
