GERMAN lilliilli
With the publication by thc .G.

House of Kiinlslllie of the war diary
of Capt. Aust, one of the surviving
oilicers oi' the German cruiser Karls-
ruhe, the mystery surrounding the
fate of the commerce dest.royer_tll.'it
terrorized British shipping in the west
ntlantiefor sevelfxinonths following
the c-utbreak of ' r seems to have
been dlspelleli. According to Captain
Aust’s account, the Karishruhe was
blown up by an internal explosion on
the evening of Nov. 4, 1914, while a
short distance off the nortlleastern
coast of South America, and her sur-
viving officers and men, sailing in one
of her prizes, succeeded ln slipping
through the' British netwark of war-
sllips and reaching a Norwegian port
on Nov. 29.
In a story headed "Mysteries of War
That Are Unsolved" of Oct_8,li)1G,mem-
tion was made of a rumor from Copen-
hagen to tile' effect that the Karlsruhe
had been litlown up at sea, and in the
' ght of Capt. Aust’s diary this report
seems to have been well i‘ounde'd. Af-
ter giving a detailed description of the
days of the war. Captain' Aust, who
was Adjutant of Captain -Erich Kohler
the crulser‘s commander, who went
down with his' ship, writes:
“On Nov. 4 His- Majesty's ship
Karlsruhe was in 10 degrees 7 mln-
utee north latitude and 55 degrees 25
minutes' west longitude and 6.30 0'-
clock in the evening. The command-
ant was on tiiebridge, together with
First Lieutenant Baron von Althaue.,
the officer on watch. and the person-
nel of the' steering and signal detach-
ments. It was the hour of the brief
tropical twilight. The members of the
crew had just finished their supper,
und, as was the custom every evening,
had assembled forward to ‘llstn to the
l~lhip'l-:- band. which had taken up its
position under the bridge. The oill-
cers and petty otlicers were still sit-
ting at their supper in their mess-
rooms- lift where the various watellcs'
and stewards, cabin boys and cooks
were also gathered. At a short dis~
tance' the cruiser was followed by tile
s-teamers Indranl and Rio Negro.
EXPLOSION JUST AFTER SUPPER.
“The finst oflicer had just risen from
the supper table and some of the of-
ficers we`re on' the point ot leaving the
hot afterport of the ship for thie cooler
atmosphere of the bridge, when n
heavy shock, follwed by' ll. muffled
cracking ami grinding, shook the ves-
sel. Tile' electric lights went out. The
ship immediately heeled over sharply
to her por; side. Some one in the of-
tlicers' mess room cried: Struck by 8
torpedol’ _'I‘hil=.- thought was taken up
mechanically by all the others. We
rushed to our posts ot action.
"Even before I had reached the' af-
ter part of- the shlp's superstructure,
which was my emergency post as sec-
ond artillery oiilcer, I heard the cry:
'Close the bulkheadsl’ and the custom-
ary live short strokes of- the ship’s
bell. Ilisllt infront of our bow I
raw the floatlng__hull of a ship which
sank in a few inilnutes. I thought it
must be n strange've'ssei with which
we had been in collision ,although this
seemed unexplalnable to me. in fact
it was the forward half of our own
ship. A terrlilc explosion had blown
His M0lell1Y'H #hip Karlsllruhe into
two pieces. ‘-
"The place where the explosion oc-
curred and its immediate neighbor-
hood, the part of the' aillp extending
from the bow to the forward stack
and including the captailra bridge and
the foremost, must have been' blown
of tile crew. ‘ln il-few inillutcs. Only
a few scattered individuals, sc-llle of
whom had been tllrown far from the
ship, could-be picked up flonl tllc
afer half of the vessel and tile boats.
They were all more or loss burned or
uiailnlcd. Tile lifter part of tile ship,
wlicre all thc bulkhellds had been clos-
ed at once, remained alloat for about
twenty minutes. 'l`o this circulll-
stance, which is blllliallt evidence ot'
the worth of our sbip’s ulatcrial and
u-;' German construction work, we sur-
vivors' principally owe our salvation.
“Tile two steaniers ucconlpallying
us at once realized the full inlpolt of
the catastrophe, which had made lt-
r.-zlif knc-wn to them through ll pillar
of fire about 100 yards lligll, and they
hastened at full steam to the vicinity
of the sinking cruiser, and put out
all their boats. Our own boats were
also got into action at once, and ill
company with the steamer's boats,
scoured tile scene of the tlishster ili
search oi' survivors. After the First
Oillcer, together with the Engineer oi’
watch, had gt.-no below and matic _~:»ul‘<~
that there was not ii living nlllll
there, the last llollt. carlyillg the
othccrs, pushed off. \Ve had llarlliy
rearzliell a distallrc ot' 100 yilrlls whcll
the stern' of our ship rose r-harply out
of ‘tha water so that her rudder and
screw were plainly visible. Then.
from the boats' tllat were still looking
for survivors'-, rung ollt tllrou clieels
for the rclnzlins of ills Majesty‘s ship
Karilsruhe, so l~lwil`tly diving into the
depths-. mill for our l'r\-llll:\d_lc.~'.
"Then :ill was still in oul: little
circle. A burden oi' sorrow and pain
lay upon us, and staring us' in our
faces were the questions-: ‘llow’_"
and ‘VVhy‘!’ They will never be nn-
swerell. Tile llisal-:ter had strllck us
so s.uddenl_v and licavily' that at iirst
we co-ulii not realize its i'llll import
and extent.
