The works have all been erected, and operations have commended. The sugar produced has been pronounced extreme- ly good; and the prices obtained in London, Dublin, and Belfast, “ have proved beyond question that the sugar obtained from beets can compete success- fully with the colonial produce of the colic.” MISAPPLICATION or Wonns av Funnies- nas.-—The misapplication of English words by foreigners is often very ludic- rous. A German friend saluted us once with, ‘Oh, good bye, good bye‘—mean- ing, of course, ' How d’ye do?’ It is said that Dr. Chalmers once entertained a dis- tinguished guest from Switzerland, whom he asked if he would be helped to kipper- ed salmon. The foreign divine asked the meaning of the uncouth ivord kipper- ed, and was told that it meant preserved. The poor man, in a public prayer, soon after offered a petition that the distin- guished divine might long be “ Kippered to the Free Church of Scotland. The advertising columns of the Aus- tralian newspapers contain several such notices as the following :—“ Wanted, by three respectable, able-bodied men from Canada, employment at clearing, fencing, or splitting firewood, by contract or week- lly wages; apply to Robert Clarke, next luck’s Stables, Collingwood." Bennet, Marshall, do Co., of Pittsburgh, have bought a quantity of large iron can- nons in Canada, which they will convert into railroad iron. The cannon were used against the United States through- out the war of l8l2. and, it is said. made if havoc among our troops at Malden nd Lundy,s Lane. Converting cannons nto railroad iron is a near approach to ting swords into plough-shnres.——Alb. Kriick. PUNCTUATION. An ingenious expedient was once devised to save a prisoner char ed with robbery, in the Criminal Court at IJublin. The prin- cipal thing that appeared in evidence against him, was a confession, alleged to have been made by him at the police office, and take do an in writing by a police oflicer, ‘and the following passage was read from " a "Magnum said he never robbed but twice said it was Crawfo ." This, it will be observed, has no mark of the writer's havin any notion of punctua- tion, but the meaning be attached to it was t is.’- “ Magnum said he never robbed but twice:—said if was Crawford." Mr. O’Gorman, the council for the pri- soner, begged to look at the aper. He perused it, and rather astonished the peace oflicer by asserting that, so far from prov- ing the guilt of the prisoner, it clearly proved his innocence. " This," said the learned gentleman, "is the fair and obvious reading of the sen- tcnc . " Magnum said he said it was Crawford. This interpretation had its effect upon the jury, and the man was acquitted. CUIING Hssis.—In the last Patent Of- dee Report, James Cam bell, of Weston, New Jersey, gives the fol owing as a supe- rior rocess for curin hams:—' ‘ The best methodl have found for curing hams is, after the bums have been cut, let them lie out on a shelf, where they can have plenty of cool air, so that the animal heat is en- tirely out of them before you attempt to put them down in salt ; then corn them down for two or three days ; after which drain ofl' any bloody water which may oarne out ; and then make the following pickle, suf- ficient to cover them:--Take 9 pounds of salt, 3 ounces of saltpetre, I ounce of salm- rstus, 4 pounds of brown sugar or molas- ses, and six gallons of water, let them lie in the above pickle f'rom three to six weeks, sec g to the size of the hams, when oumny take them out and smoke them with good hickory or apple-wood until suf- fiefent to suit your taste. They should then be taken down and hung up in a dry, cool less. in bags to protect them from the flies. Sir,—-Your Pills lisve been the means. under Pro- videncs. of restoring me to sound health. after five years of severe iililiction. During the whole of that period, I have suffered the most dreadful attacks of Asthma, frequently of several weeks’ duratioa,nttend- ed with a violent cough, and continual I itting of phlegm intermixed with blood. As a preofof their etlicacy in Liver and Bilious complaints, I may mention the fol- lowing case: A lady of this town, with whom I am rsoually acquainted for years, was a severe sufl'en-r from disease of the Liver and digestive organs; her medical attendant assured her that he could do no- thing to relieve her sufferings, and it was not likely she could survive many months. ‘ii announce- ment naturnlly caused great riliirm among her friends and relations. and they induced her to make a trial of your Pills, which so improved her general health that she was induced to continue them until she received a perfect cure.
