AUTOMATIC Nothing more marvellous thar the following story, told in the letter of a Globe« Democrat correspondent has ever seen in print. It rivals the fantasies of Edgar Pope. New York, the 19th inst., the corres pondent says : Yesterday your corres pondent called Dr. Clarence Bigelow’s attention to an article printed recently in the city newspapers, descriptive of an Australian discovery whereby catcle can he frozen, laid away for weeks, and then brought back to life and genv'ne activity. The purpose of this discovery is toship live meat in iceboxes, and kill it on the other side of the ocean after it is thawed out again. In this way the cost of food and attention can be dispensed with while at sea. In case of emergency a man travelling from California can buy a first-class ticket for himself, and ship the rest of the ‘family, including the mother-in law in patent refrigeratore. At the terminus ot his journey he could restore his chil- dren to their youthful vigor, and his wife to her proper station at the washs tub or cook-stove. Your correspondent asked the doctor what he thought about it. It is nothing,’ said he, ‘ to the great crowning effort of medical science that [ witnessed a few nights since.’ Pray, what was that ?? was asked, TUE DEAD TO LIFE. Che doctor refiected for a few mo- ments, and then he spoke as follows : ‘When you publish what 1 am about to tell you it will set the whole country ringing. Accompanied by my friends Judge Warren and Dr, Chambers, I went last week to one of the up-town hospitals, whither we had been invited by Prof. Doremus and the house physi- ‘cians. On our arrival,we were shown at once tothedissecting room. At the foot of an amphitheatre of seats stood a long table, on which rested some im- movable object, covered with a white sheet. Most of the seats were occupied by medical students from the Bellevue and Roosevelt hospitals. Myself and party were assigned to chairs on the platform. Shortly after éight o’clock the white sheet was removed, and I saw on the table the nude body ofa map. Presently Dr. White stepped down by the table and said: ‘My friends, the body before me is that of a man who bled to death. He was employed in a plaining mill on West Sixteenth street, near North river. He fell against one of the swift revolv- ing saws, one of the large arteries was severed, and the blood which is life, flowed out before assistance could ar- rive.’ THE VITAL FLUID. ‘The doctor paused,’ continued Dr, Bigelow, ‘ for a few moments, looking, meanwhile, attentively at the body. Then he continued : ‘ There isa mere cessation of life, because the blood was diverted from its natural channel. I cai discover no injury save the severed artery. It is absolutely necessary to the success of the experiment we are about to witness that the organs of the boy be uninjured, for any material injury to any organ—I mean vital or- gan—would preclude the possibility of its performing its functions, since science cannot restore the organ. But where the action of the organ is inter- rupted by some cause that does not materially injure the organ, then I be- lieve that the organ may be again com. pelled to performits duty. As the great wheel of a mill may be stopped by shutting off the water, so may it be made to revolve again. by turning the water on, thus the blood, which turns the wheels of the body, having been diverted, the wheels stopped, I claim that this body may be brought to life. Whether the soul has departed and can be brought back, or whether the mind may restored, I cannot tell ; but I be-} lieve | can again set at work every ma- terial organ of this body. I have care- fully closed up the severed arteries.’ (Concluded in our next.) Liver is King. ‘he liver is the imperial organ of the whole human system, as it controls the life, health and happiness of man. When it is disturbed in its proper action, all kinds of ailments are the natural result. The di- gestion of food, the movements of the heart anc blood, the action of the brain and ner- vous system, are all immediately connected with the workings of the liver. It has been successfully proved that Green’s August Flower is unequalled in curing all persons affiicted with dyspepsia or liver complaint, an: all the numerous symptoms that result from an unhealthy condition of the liver an stomach. Ch’town, Dee, 23, 1878— CATARREHE., Constitutional Catarrh Remedy CURES CATARRE. —— Hear what a Reverend Gentleman says of the Constitutional Remedy. T. J. B. Harpine, Esq., Brockville, Ont.:— Drar Str—It is now two years since your “Constitutional Catarrh Remedy’ was intro- duced to me. I have waited this ong to see if the cgre would remain permanent before do- ing this, my duty, to you, as at first the happy effects seemed to mé to be ‘too good to be true.” _ I was afflicted in my head for years before I suspected it to be Catarrh. In reading in your Circular I saw my case described in many par ticulars. The inward ‘‘drop” from the head had become very disagreeable, and a choking sensation often preventing me from lying long, I would feel like smothering and be compelled to sit upin the bed. My health and spirits were seriously affected. When your agent came to Walkertown in August, 1876, I secured three bottles. Before I had used a quarter of the contents of one bottle I found decided re- lief, and when I had used two bottles and a third. I quit taking it, feeling quite cured of that ailment, and have not used any since until of late I have taken some for a cold'in my head, A sense of duty to sufferers from that loath- some disease, Catarrh, prompts me to send you this Certificate, unsolicited, with leave to make what use of it yon may see proper Yours truly, _W.
