Considerable surveying for under- drainage has been done; the layin g of tile has been supervised at West .Cape and East Point. Requests for thls work promise a busy season ne-xt year.. The season has been quite favor- able for the production and harvest- ing of large crops; the pastures have been good and the supply of milk to the factories have been large. The prices have been considerably above normal. Thus the returns have been quite satisfactory. One of the greatest needs is improvement in the live -stock; the markets` are nearby and th? improvement in transportation fa ilities will certainly be- a stimulus. _ THE FISHERIES Lobster.fishing in Prince Edward lslanfd-during the .year has been sat- isfactory and a considerable increase over the- catch of the previous year is reported. The’ fishermen received a higher price for live ilcbsters and their earning capacity was thus materially increased. It is pleasing to note that there has been' a substantiaii increase in the catch of cod, bake. anti other ground fish "with good results to both fisher- men and exporters. It has been suggested that a great advantage to tile iisliernlerl of P. E. Island would be the erection of small cod storage plants at the different fish- ing centres ill order that ilsllernlen coulld be supplied continuously with fresh habit. _ IN CHAR LOTTETOWN Owing tg the war there was not as much activity in civic circles as. under normal conditions. Nevertheless a con- siderable amount of important work was accomplished. Perhaps the most important under- taking was the installation' of the new power pump at the main pumping stat- ion, putting 'the city on a footing of ab- solute security as far as the water s\p» ply ls concerned. A powerful new boil- er is now being inst-allied in No. 1 stat- ion for use in connection with the driv- - ing of the new pump. No. 2 the aux- iliary station has been enlarged and a new pump an'd engine have been in- stalled there. The purchase' of a mod- ern chemical engine and five hundred _more feet of new hose. along with the improvements above noted, should go a considerable way t0Wsi’dB Dlitiiilg Charlottetown in a 110510011 Of Safely from loss by fire. ' The plan to make an extension of the Fire Department's il\1Hi`i9l'9 Im” year, unfortunately, had to be aban- doned, but it is hoped that this much needed improvement will be broulrhi about next year. The installing of a new boiler in the basement of the city' Hall _ for the proper heating of the building was a much needed move as was also the placing of new oak d00i`S inset with plate glass at the el\ii’ili1C€ of the City b_ui‘l4iin'g. This house has compartments for four families two on the first fiat and two above". The house is fitted 'with all modern innovations making for comfort and convenience, and is thoroughly up-to date in every way. A decidedly fine residence is that of Mr. A. E. Duff on the North River Road. It is built in American Colo- nial style and cost some $15,000. Needless to say it is aplendidly fin- ished throughout and the workman- ship is u credit to the contractors; Messrs H. & S. Lowe. Another notable building project in the same locality is the large tlouble tenement house of Mr. Russell E. built for Admiral‘Bayi1e-ld and was for many years the home of the late Mr. W. C. White, Registrar of Deeds. The building was this sum- mer removed to its present localioii on North River Road and practically rebuilt and made into a two-tena- 'ment structure. The Cundall brick property on King Street is also being remodelled and made into ra home for young women according to the wish expres- sed in the will of the late owner. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. The year now drawing to a close, thanks to the prowess of Charlotte- town's able aggregation of firefight- ers was not marked by any very ser- ious confiagration in' the city. There' were a total of twenty-nine alarms `in all sent in, including the one for aid for Summers-ide'.' The previous year there were only nineteen alarms. On December 11-ith. after a period of prosperity and commercial activi- ty unprecedented -in its history. Sum- ulerslde was visited by a disastrous confiagration which swept both sides of Water Street from Queen and Cen- tral Streets to -Summer Street and from the Waterfront ‘to First Street. The loss was estimated .at $300,000 covered by about $225,000 insurance. The business houses thus put out of business with their stores filled with Christmas and winter stocks have, notwithstanding their serious loss, al- ready pluckily commenced operations in temporary quarters pending the erection in the Spring of new business homes. Like many similar disasters this fire was a blessing in disguise as bye-laws have already been' enacted requiring that all buildings hence- forth erected along Water Street shall be of other material than wood. Sum- niexhlde will arise from thi); _tempor- ary se't-back with the vigour display- ed after the serious confiagration of ten years previously. ` Navigation to and from the Western capital closed for the season this n_lorning_ when the Northumberland leaves. for .Char- lottetowii. GEORGETOWN. For the first time since the out- break of the war, barracks _were in- stituted .in Georgetown 'and a por- tion of the 105th quartered there last winter. The presence of these young men brightened up the town considerably. A regular moving picture show for a. few months during the wiliter and spring helped greatly to brighten the life of the town. The- Railway Wharf was consider- a_bly damaged by drliftioe last spring but is now undergoing repairs. Mr. John Stewart has erected a splendid cottage on Water Street. equipped with all the modern con- veni nces. - Mr. Douglas MacDonald has also established a convenient and com- fortable home on Water Street near the Railway Station. Mr. W. W. Jenkins and Mr. John Dalziel have added improvements to their already well appointed residi ences. A new Grocery Business has been established on Kent Street by Mr. John McK.innon.- A new Gasoline Ferry Boat, built by Mr. Charles Fitzgerald. is now running on the route between Cardi- gan and Georgetown. _ » Marriages and deaths have' been comparatively infrequent during the _year. Among the older residents who have joined the -gre-at majority are: Mrs. Andrew Glover, Mrs. Walter Gordon and Capt. Daniel Walker. The Presbyterian and Anglican Churches have been repaired and now presont a much more pleasing ap- psarance. St. Davld’s Presbyterian Church has had the entire interior remodell- cd and improved lighting installed. Bazaars have been held by the Presbyterian Church and the Wo- men's institute- which were well pat- ronlzed and very successful. A pleasing incident of the year was a Spinning Frolic which was held in the interests of the _Womans In- stitute. Over thirty spinners with old fashioned spinning wheels spent the afternoon preparing yarn for the sol- diers use.- .____¢_.._.__,..1__.
