One of the Ireatest arguments cow actually produces more milk. Many experiments have ‘been tried sit. our experimental stations, and the cow fmshenlng in autumn will produce from one-fourth to one-fifth more milk on ‘identically the same rations. The fact. that. she does this is easily accounted for. 1n the autumn when the cow ls actually at her maximum lpmduction on ac- count of the recent blrtlh 0t the calf, la addition to the pasture o’: roughage dine generally receives u good ration of grain and roots, fur- ther stimulating this natural tend- ency toward larger production. Then in spring, rafter being fed well during tbe winter months, and when her Lactation period is well along. aha 1a turned out on grass, and this again stimulates her pm- ductlon very lmuob. A good cow when turned on good grass, after having lmilked heavily during the winter, will milk during the months 0f dune and July almost. as much as though she were fresh caived. Then in summer, when pasture is naturally short and flies are bad. Iaho dries up, as is pQH-OOUY ltfflper. and takes her rest period at the proper time when her ownu- i! above, one must give the cow a. square deal; do not only take the actual money received for milk or milk products. but give her credit for her calf, then tho manure, and again for what milk, cream and butter one uses in the homer as well as for the skim milk fed the pigs and other stock. ,lf you will only do this you will be surprised at what even ordinary cows will do. But bets-t of all, keep records so that you can raise young stock from your beat cows sired by bet-l tt-r bulls, and l can guarantee that and is again ready when the busy season is over to mpewt new last year's record. The iblllfl upon which a dairy farmer should discard cows from his herd is somewhat bard to de- termine. Where all feeds consum- ed by the cow are charged to her art ruling prices, her feed bill will be about sixty per cent. of actual expenses, but if feeds are charged at. tbe actual cue-t. of production. then the individual bill will be quite a lot. less, say about ‘fifty per cent. This looks large, but it must be bourne in lmind that such other factors as labor, housing, interest and depreciation tools and lmple manta must all the considered. Therefore a cow must not only pay for ‘her feed alone, if she is doing this and nothing more she is not profitable. To be a real mo- ney-maker whenfeed la charged at the actual cost of production, she should produce enough milk to pay the bill and as lmuch lmore, and than some! llf your cows are not doing this you had bet-tar get rid of them or look out and find b: tter markets for your milk and milk products.
