SIR CHARLES IN ST. JOHN. Montreal, Feb. 18. The Grit blizzard of blackguardism has been succeeded by a cyclone of falsehoods which are telegraphed all over the country in order to keep up drooping spirits of the organized hypocrisy. The first having ig- nominiously failed, they evidently hope to bewilder electors with latter tacties; but ‘*truth cryshed to earth will rise again on Tuesday next, and assert itself with tre- mendous force as it did in 78 and 82. Dupont and Gigault, elected by accla-f mation, whom the Grits claim as supporters of Blake, are stumping Quebec for the Gov- ernment. They also claim Ross and © Meara as opponents of the Government. Ross telegraphs as follows to Sir John :— Wuixnipec, Feb. 16. **Regarding Globe's classification of me, I am a strong’ supporter of yours, and was elected as such in face of strong opposition from local Grit papers. I will continue to support the Government, thinking its policy much better for the country than that of the Opposition, (Signed) A. W. Ross.” Mr. O'Meara telegraphed from Kamloops under date 16th inst., that he was elected by acclamation, and hopes his seat in the House of Commons may be as near as possible to the seat occupied by Sir John. Besides constituencies mentioned yester- day as abandoned by the Grits, they have not nominated party candidates for Soulanges. This makes twenty-three seats already secured to the Government against four to Blake. It is almost as bad as it was four years ago, when they allowed thirty seats to go by defaylt. Archbishop Tache signed the nomination papers of Hon. Mr. R yal, the Conservative for Provencher. The Opposition to Sir John, in Carleton, to the Hon, Thos. White,Hou. Mr. Bowell, Hon. Mr. Kirkpatrick, to Ward, Haggart, Bell, Ferguson and Tyrhwitts is purely fa tous.§ Ble Grits also concede that Sir John will redeem Kingston, while Blake will be defeated in West Durham. Toronto, Feb. 18. There never was so much excitement here over an election contest. Thousands of Catholics, manufacturers and working- men, who supported Mowatt are as enthu- siastically working for the Government and the National Policy now. There is no more prabability of Ontario going bick onthe N. P., than there is of Mr. Blake's flying. n é Quesec, Feb. 18, The Mercury to-night discloses a boodle scheme rivalling that of New York. - A. ©. Langelier, brother of the Mayor, and a prominent Grit, together with other mem- bers of the party of purity, are proven to have accepted bribes in connection with the waterworks. The affair causes a great , sensation, and will be the death knell of the Grits of this city. Moncrox, Feb. 18. The English and Irish people of West- moreland are greatly exasperated at the arrival of the Rielite missionaries from | Quebec, to incite the French Acadians against the Government for carrying out the law. St. Jouy, Feb. 18.
