STUDENT UNION NEWSLETTER PAGE 2 Vice Presidents Sntomad Well this has been a very interesting and exciting year here at the Student Union. Much of my time was spent working with the Cadre and the Yearbook. | would like to thank Becky and all the staff and volunteers at the Yearbook and Kent, Sarah, Richard and all the staff and volunteers at the Cadre for all their help and for a job well done this year. I've worked hard this year to strengthen UPEI's involvement in the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS). I've set up information tables and postered campus to familiarize students with CFS and the services they offer us as members. Recently, with the help of a great campaigns committee, | was able to organize active involvement in CFS's ‘Access 2000' campaign here at UPEI. Hundreds of students came out for our Awareness raising ‘Kraft Dinner’ Lunch, over 200 postcards signed by students were sent to local MP’s and petitions gathered 350 UPEI signatures to be sent to the House of Commons. The evening panel discussion brought much support for our campaign and some effective debate about higher education in our province. Media coverage on this day of action was widespread and student's concerns were voiced clearly to government, administration and the public, making the campaign an undeniable success at UPEI. Government relations with the Student Union have been great this year. The February 2” forum, as well as an executive meeting with the Minister of Education earlier in the year and the opportunity to meet recently with the Minister of Finance to present the Alternative Provincial Budget have insured that UPEI students concerns are being heard by government. I've had the opportunity to organize student involvement in various nationwide community activities such as the ‘AIDS walk’ put on by AIDS P.E.I. in Charlottetown, ‘The White Ribbon Campaign’ to stop gender violence and ‘The Have a Heart campaign’ for AIDS awareness. As UPEI's last VP External I'm proud of what has been accomplished in External Affairs this year and | would like to thank everyone who helped me make this year so successful. B.J.
