Davidge began his opening argument for the prosecution before the jury in the Gui- teau case to-day, at 100’clock. He briefly referred tu the leading legal aspects of the case, and commented on rulings made by: Judge Cox on law points. The only ques- tion was that of insanity, and he argued the prisoner had that degree of intelligence, lege knowledge and moral sense which rendered him responsible for his acts. He called attention to the prisener’s own ad- wission of his sanity, but who had been ‘‘inspired” during a specified period of time, making him irresponsible for that particular crime In speaking of Guiteau’s plan he remarked upon bis greater fear of the mob than of the law. It rested with the jury to show the world whether Gui- teas opinion was well founded. Guitean made several inteiruptions, most of them irrelevant and simply abusive. CORRESPONDENCE, We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions or statements of our correspondenta, To the Editor of the Examiner. Siz,—I see by the Examiner of the 9th inst., a communication on ordination at East Point, signed J. Harris, Ch town, I wondered why our friend felt so aggrieved over the remarks of Mr. McDonald in his letter of the 5th ult. He alludes to Mr. McDonald as sneering at the Denomination known as Bible Christians. I have read Mr, McDonald’s letter, and I see nothing of a sneering character in it, without he claims that his allusion to Mr. Kinley leaving that denomi- nation on account of his finding that infant baptism and sprinkling are not taught in the Bible. Suppose Mr. Kinley leit that denomination on the plea that the saviour of the world died for the rem ssion of our sins, would Mr. Harris count it a sneer— should re erence be made to it? Certainly not. Why! Because - it is a Bible sub- ject, and the other is not, and it would be a credit to him rather than a disgrace. Again, Mr, Harris seems to rejoice over the fact that one of their lay members has jumped toa position in the first ranks in the Baptist Church. Well, [am sure it is not because of anything peculiar to the teachings of the Bible Christian Denomin- ation, but because vf Mr. Kinley’s natural ability. Yours, ete., J. McMasrTers. —_— The Emperor William’s manifesto con- tinues to excite a great deal of comment, and there are many signs of an impending constitutional struggle. A Berlin corres- pondent says the rescript is only the first step ‘‘ towards protecting the Government from becoming the instrument of Parlia- mentary majorities.” In the Reichstag, in a discussion on the factory laws, Bismarck ‘was charged with dragging the name of the Emperor into the debate whenever a donbt- ful question was before the House, and icft the chamber in indignation. Red tape is indigenous to all climes. Station Master Poulsen, at the Danish rsilway station of Barrie, wae on Dec 14th appointed weigher by the Government.
