RUM-RUNNING IN MANY (YOIJNTIIIII In the great struggle in the world between good and evil. rum- running ever becomes more prom- inent. Even under licensed condi- tions the mute character of the alcoholic trade is lawlessness. Last llbbrunry the United States Government submitted to the Not- wegian and Eelglbn llovemmenis shores of the United States involv- ing the subjects and ships of those nations. Protcstatlons were made to the Belgian a.mbasso.dor against Belgian tramp oleamers being al- lowed to land lliluor at Antwerp wnlhout the necessary certificates of their legal destination. Representations were also made to the Norwegian Govcmmem. to the effect Norwegian steamers had been irransferrillg alcohol cargoes: to small mm runners off at. Pierre. Miquelon. in contravention of the law which fsrbids vessels flying the Norweigiali flag when engaged in smuggling. Photos were also sent to Can- adian Government on the allega- tion that rum runners were chart- ered by a Halifax man through I firm of Glasgow ship-brokers. Last March saw a great round- ing-up of this class of criminals. There was unearthed in New York City a s7,ooO.ooo boatles ring which evidently had been operating for a year and a, half. The liquor had been smuggled from Canada and elsewhere. This flourishing businells had been conducted from four suites of offices in two hotels. and the liquor being retnllcd from twenty-seven bars and grills. Another ring was located a few weeks later in the same city, which‘. according to the "New York Times’ quoting Assistant United states At- torney Dunnigan, “Owned sllllls “"1 elaborate means of mmmllnlvflllm and that it mid been llmdlmz tho country with illicit liquor smllailkd in from Norwegian, Danish. At the same date it pI"‘~'~‘ (W- palch recorded the nrrult oi thirty- five persons charged with partici- pating in an lniernnlluial alchOl- smuggllng ring. which "!"(l<‘I1d0d from Brussels in New Y0?“ V“ Nova Scotla. and Mcmlwnl " photos to prove the charge that there was rum-running to Still a few days lalnr New York the sguin was the scene of another un- covering of an alcohol-smuggling conspiracy which had been doing 5 sross business of t20.000.000 a year. In this case an American freighter iigured. purporting to carry cool, but it unloaded 1,000 cases of alcohol. The world has legalized the sale of liquor on the excuse of keeping the traffic within legal bounds. Nothing could be farther from the true stair. Under the cover of legality this business knows no bounds of restraint. TWO LIVES Grief is is delicate and fragile flower. fading even more easily than joy. but never wholly dead. Like the rose of Jericho. though seemingly dried and withered post recagnitioh. yet, if bill. one wlmn breath pass over it for s msment. it will bloom again with renewed freshness. Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful, and those who seem to forget have often the saddest hearts. in each and all of us life is twofold.
