——— oe art fu DAILY EXAMINER. TUESDAY, JUNE 21. 1892. ‘DAILY EXAMINER. JUNE 21, 1292. THE Temperance in Prince County. iw the course of their report to Mr. Jus- tice Hensley, who lately presided in tho Supreme Court for Prince County, the Grand Jury say that ** the people generally are law-abiding and moral, as the small docket and the nature of the offences pre- sented to the jury testify.” And they con- tinue, — “We have also to report that the Canada Temperance Act is doiog a good work for the canse of temperance, for n twithstanding the imperfections of the statute, it has made the drinking of ardent spirits disreputable and in a large measure put au end to one of the most pernicious customs connected with the liquor traffic—treating The jery would, however, report that to accomplish @ perm. nent and true temperance reform the law should be supplemented by the advocacy f temperance by every man and women in the community and would warn temperance advo- cates generally not to depend entirely upon legislation to produce the reform needed, for laws, unless backed up by « strong, public sontiment, are frequently honored more in the breach than in the fulfilment. The truth and wisdom of the latter part this quotation will be admitted by all. It is pleasing to have this evidence that the people of Prince County are waking up to the necessity for greater earnestness al d less hypocrisy; stronger and more gener al advocacy of temperance principles, and less drinking on the sly on the part of Scott Act supporters. These are necessary to 4 “‘per- manent and irue”’ temperance reiorm. - mem e ——--- a Mr. Blake's New Departure. Tue acceptance by Mr. Blake of an offer of a constituency in Ireland and a seat in the House of Commons, is a living proct of the practical union aud growing mutual in- terests and sentiment of Great Britain aud her colonies. The offer shows, too, that narrow jealousies do not prevent the po i- ticians of the Mother Country from seek- ing, even beyond the seas, the assistance of men of first-class ability. It well for Canada if her constituencies would, without reference to ‘“‘cheek” or wealth, or any advantitious circumstances, seek out and elect only the men best fitted to represent them in Parliament. Whether Mr. Biaske will meet the expectations of the Home Rule Party remains to be seen. We sincerely hope that he wili. It is, of course, possible that a gifted man who has failed as a political leader in Canada may succeed as a political leader in Great Britain. At all events, the Home Rule Party are in need of a leader who is able to unite the factions into which it has un- fortunately been divided—a champion who will aid the Grand Old Man in fighting the powers arrayed against the Irish cause. We therefore hope that Mr. McCarthy and his friends chose wisely when they chose Mr. Blake. The struggle to be forthwith engaged in in Great Britain will be all the more intensely interesting to Canadians in view of the fact that Mr. Blake is to be one of the combatants. would be ere Notes and Comments. —The air of the House of Commons is being analyzed for the purpose of discover- ing whether the headache of which sume hon. members complain is due to bad air. The probability is that it is rather owing to over-eating or drinking, or some other cavse. — The Week says that ‘“‘ the man who resorts to the fu quoque argument gives up his case.” That is what the Patriot cid last evening in respect to the Land Office mess. By the way, what has the eXperse incurred in respect to the revision of the laws todo with Mr. Peters’ dectatorship in the Land Office and the shortage? —It is pleasing to learn that Mr. J. A Nicholson, who was, without cause, su n- marily dismissed by the Peters combina- tion, has been offered and has accepted the Principalship of the Cote St. Antoine Academy, Montreal, ata salary consider- ably larger than he would have received had he continued in the office of Superin- tendant of Educetion for this Province. As showing the regard in which Mr. Nicholson is held by those who know hm in Montreal, it may be remarked that he was offered the firsc important educational vacancy which occurred in that city. Mr. Nicholson’s prospects for future advance- ment ate good ; and he will have an oppor- tunity to continue the law studies which he began after he was unjustly deprived of his office under the Government. —-A correspondent of the Uttawa Citizen writes as follows concerning a gentleman, recently deceased, who was well known in this Province :— ** There d away on the 7th inst. in the person of Mr. Isaac Roberts Eckart, one of the most refined and sensitive natures that can be imagined. Up toa few years ago he held the position of assistant-secretary of the Province ot Ontario, which ition he filled for thirteen years ; but then, falling into bad health, he had never been a strong man, al- though his bright complexion and brighter eye seemed to indicate otherwise, he was obliged to resign with a written promise from the government, who were all his friends, that he should receive an equally honorable position when his health improved. It did not improve in a great measure, but thet dread disease consumption overtook him and has laid him low at the age of 5l. Few were more loved and admired while he was iathe world All who keew him best will think of his generous and sympathetic nature, too much so, indeed, for he sacrificed himself too often for others. The writer knew him all his life and pays him this brief tribute trom actual knowledge of what he was. His intellect was of no ordivzary nature. He wrote several articles while living in Quebec in 1885 «nd 1886 which were publis!.ed in the Chronicle, notably, one called ‘ Queen or President,’ which were much admired ; ‘ British Connection versus Independence or Annexation in Disguise.’ ” The straits of Belle Iaie are blocked with field ice.
