[ry is gratifying to note that our leading practical men of business have been doing : fair trade, and that some of them are ¢) Jarging their borders notwithstanding oll the competition and the unprecedentedly ‘ow prices. Yesterday a representative of ‘|e | XAMINER called upon the enterprising ry goods firm of Perkins & Sterns, and una that to their former large premises, y save added the store recently occupied Robert Young. The interior of this re they have completely renovated and re-fittcd in the most modern style. It is very weil lighted (which is a great point heu ‘uying goods) and presents a very eat oud udy appearance. In the wall a ige oreh is cut which allows of easy access twe u the two buildings. At this arch e cosh desk is placed, from which the cushier can see persons entering or ing vat either door, and when the cash . taken for goods sold throughout the whole telepnone to the ear and | hange, is District Superintendent | |pleased and agreeably surprised, Little | did we think that right in our midst there was such talent. At the close, there was quite an animated discussion, after which a hearty vote of thanks was tendered the ilecturer, for his highly pleasing and in- ' structive lecture, and also to the Chairman, | Mr, Lantz; who, [ may say, is expected, or | has partly consented to deliver a lecture isome future day. From what we have seen and heard of Mr. Lantz, I think we shall not be disappointed. 1 may here state that | Mr. Alexander McMillan, one of our most | talented faru.ers, has been requested, and I have no doubt, will deliver us a lecture | this winter. | Bethel Lodge, is steadily advancing, and I | believe will continue to advance, despite the ‘efforts to crush it. Under the able man jagement of W. H. Lord, W. C., our meet- lings ere highly interesting and instructive. | The people of Belfast would like to know why the Board of Commissioners and Inspector are not doing their duty. If they license some to sell, and take their money, jhave they nota right to protect them by | preventing others selling without a license. Names of individuals who could give evidence in certain cases have been fur- nished, and still no action; and now there are no less than four diff rent places within a radius of six miles where liquor of the most deadiy kind can be bought. Some- thing ought and must be done at once. If not, what is the use of a Board of Commis- sioners and Inspector, with their Chairman, who, I presume, are all drawing salaries ? Come, Mr. Inspector, you must be up and at work, or the odium will rest on your shoulders. We, parents and guardians, have submitted to reproach and insult on months past a man who was evidently a foreigner, although he spoke English flu- ently, has been accustomed to hiring boats, generally for one or two hours. The man had acompanion with him, On Saturday, the stranger, who is described as a tman thirty five years of age, with a pale complexion, light moustache and dressed in a pepper-and-salt tweed suit and soft felt hat without an overcoat, hired a boat about 4 o'clock in the afternoon. His companions were of the same age, each having black whiskers and moustache, bleck overcoat and trousers, one wearing a tall hat, and the other a low one. They had with them a_ parcel about nine inches square, which they handled carefully. The boat keeper says he is able to swear positively in regard to the sup- posed foreigner, but is uncertain whether he can recognize the other. An examina- tion of the boat guard resulted in the dis- covery of what is supposed to be a cartridge. It is painted red at one end, and is an inch and a half long, and of the thickness of a man’s forefinger. One stone in the second arch of fLondon Bridge, just above low water line, has thirteen cracks, resembling precisely those in a plate glass window. An Editor Assaulted. Lonpon, Dee. 17. Mr. Kirk, editor of the Birmingham Dart, was roughly handled to-day. A party of roughs invaded the office of the paper and violently assaulted him. The reason for the assault was that Mr. Kirk had said in his paper that the country would know in the future how much re- liance should be placed on the word of the CH HA EP. 1,200 Yards Cotton and Flannel SHIRTINGS, FLANNELS AND BLANKETS.
