A i Karin Ellis a New‘ Reviews iirop Mr. L. Roper who has been travelling extensively over the island in his ofiictal capacity oi l‘ ‘ ' cattle iieldman, states that potato growers are hard hit in many areas despite spraying precautions taken. Some oi the farmers are considering digging a portion of the crop in order to save as many oi the tubers as they can. The strongest sight he had seen, Mr. Roper said, was fields oi grain, ripened to the shelling ' state. being cut near fields oi standing hay. In many localities the grain is fast ripening although 70 percent o! farmers are still haying. Mangle and turnip cro look well but control oi weeds s diiii- cult due to continuous rains and the shortage of farm labor. in the United States. Mr- Seely Raga Amby of the Walker Gordon La ratories, Inc., Charles River, Mass, recently purchased a car- load oi dairy cows of various breeds, which have been delivered rlt Neel/ham, Mass, and which have proved so satisfactory that Mr. Amby will be returning for larger shipments; in fact he will‘ require several cars per year. At present this establishment in various units have on hand 3600 cattle of various breeds and is the only known place which uses a Rotrolax milker. The machine carries 12 cows and is in opera- tion 2i hours daily although it requires only one minute r cow. This iarm supplies certif ed] milk to various parts of Mass- achussetts. It is pasteurized in l7 seconds and never comes in contact with air until it reaches the consumer. The cows are wash- ed three times daily and dried under glass driers. Mr. Roper states that prices paid ior good cattle, i200 lbs. anri over range from $170 to $225 {These were ordinary well brerl cattle of the Holstein, Gurnsey, and Ayrshire breeds and not show cattle. Mr- Roper commented on the tendency n many Island districts to breed herds to beei sires. This is due chieily to labour shortage and will. it is reared, lessen but- ter and cheese production. The demand for beef is such that it matters little in this regard. At present the number of bee! own- ers is much greater than last year. Mr. Roper also commented on the increase in hog production, in- dicating that Island farmers are doing their best to assist in fill- ing the quota for Britain. On many rarms visited, where there used to be six or seven hogs there now more than double that number. At one farm alone there are 300 hogs. These are fed and cared ior under the self-feeding system which requires refilling of only other attention required is the supplying of water and dry bedding.
