May s— THE DAILY EXAM&NER, CHa cLUTTETOWN, JUNE 5, 3 RU \Y Weems LETTER FROM CALIFORNIA. Famed Santa Clara and its Scenery le g thering the beautiful showy blossoms in field or lane. ‘There are many varieties ef wild flow- » California, and they are very beautiful. I sball not soon forget a drive on the first of May, to the mountains, some eight or nine years ago. ‘d be mou: tain slopes with cultivated foot hills, showrd various shades of green. [on some places you could notice fruit trees planted in ‘rderly fashion on the slopes. Then, again, fields of grain, the mountais ridges makir g material divisions between pretty culti:ated patches. As you ascend the winding road and look backon the beautiful scenery, you could say it was beautifully named “Buena Vesta,” or Beautiful View, the valley below reach- ing out for miles, with its thousands of acres of fruit trees or grain; beautiful homes dotting the whole outlook, and here and tl ere cluatered in a village, town or City. You have to see it to fully enjoy it, and see it also in its first full glory of luxuri- ant spring blossom, and leafage; after the early and later rains have had their mission accomplished. Here for months in summer we have no rain, and the hills grow very brown and sombre looking. In summer evenings our somtre hills can take on quite 4 transformation ecene when a purplish haze envelopes them, aad lo! nature has put on a reyal dress only subdued in tint and verv sheer in texture. Now veu will want to know the name of thie mountain range. It was formerly called the missiou range in this part of C.liformia, and forms part ofthe coast range on either side of the valley. Li-+k Overrvs ory is placed upon its highest euinmit. Ob! the mountains are grand—but ers here i 2OwD ssem wonderful, But there ‘s a great depth of rich soil, and the roots reach and nourlsbment avd moisture from the stored rains of the pest receive season. The orchardiet e1 deavors _to guard against the soll losing its mo:sture and baking, 80 by ploughing, cultivating harrowing and rolling he keeps down | weeds, crushes lumps, trying to keep the loosened friable condition, vet compact, by use of the roller, So you see now have grassy orchards to walk about in—but powdery mother earth. In Southern California orange groves | by means of canals every 80 in &@ we ad ire irrigate month orasix weeks of. summer as they may require, Inthe Santa Clara valley these last two years Orchardists are hav- ag irrigating plants placed on their fruit ranches to guard against drouth, using tific al means to bring water to their tr-es, and irrigation ditiches carry the needed moisture to the roots. The natur- al rain notonly gives moisture to the roots but creates an atmosphere which is refreshing to leaf and branch. This year the orchardist feele encourag- ed as California has been blessed with abundant showers. In another letterI may give the prices of land as compared with home and an account of beautiful flowers grown as well as fruits. Amy questious your subscribers would like to ask I Mightanswer through your columns. ZEPHYR. Prunes are very mach ¢ iltivated here. Io Santa Clara they are ai.ex:ellent fruitto raise, demand a good price avd are easily handled. The fruit felis, anc is picked from the ground instead of the tree. For insiance ove hasa_ tep acre rapch of pruoes ready to sei! toa purchaser from the trees, TLe one who buys perbsope etip ulates how they are to be handled aud may say thatonly onthe third picking of the fruit must the trees be shaken. This is to insure ripe fruit being seci bim. Then when the fruitis dropping your tw» or three laborers begin their work on the ten acre lot. By the t'me they get through the, can go back towherethey began aud pick the eecond falling of fiuii—snd when that bas been gather-d they may +hoke the trees avd p ck the remainder. Those who sell vo not lke to have the fruit remain lorg on ‘he ground for it shrioks in weight bv being exposed to the hot suo, aud inihai cae ther do not receive a* much as for more juicy frui:, which weighs more. They prefer the drying process to goon iv the drier or evaporstor when it pas changed hands. So it is to the advantage of tbe fruit grow- er to send to the “drier” as soon as possi= ble after the fruit falls to the ground, be~ fore nature’s great evaporator, the sun, does his work. Itis tothe advantage of the purchaser to bring fruit that has fallen, eo to insure ripe fruit, not baving the irees shaken until the last picking. Now the ororge crop 8 treated in a dif- ferent way. The purchaser burs und has permission to leave the fruit on the trees until June, if they so agree. The fruit is deliciously ripe in February—but will hangon the tree perhaps ten monthe ifit bas received no bruises, It isa very tenacious fruil; but if pierced bya thorn or damaged in the Jeast will drop from the tree and then is classed as interior fruit and ca!led “ culls.” The branches of the orange tree have many thorns, and wher a wind storm come®, the branches ewaying 10 and fro cause some of their thorns to pierce the oracge, Which, being injared, drepsin a dayorse. The tre itself is very beanti- ful, It has adark glossy rich green leaf, — the aewer growth a light green, making a preity contrast. When the fragrant blos- toms have developed aad matured to fruit, the dark rich leaves make a good back ground, aod the view is enriched by the golden orange fruit, You may ask how May trees four months and fometimes more wi:bout summer rain, yield fruit.
