The fire is spreading rapidly ‘owing to the protracted drought ‘toward the centre of the forest, where the depot is located and the - military authorities considered the distribution of the masks as a pre- caution agalnst an explosion releas- ing the deadly gas. l-louthoulst Wood was the scene of some of‘ the bitterest fighting in the war. Held by the Germans, it. was first attacked by the French and later by the British: both attacks were repulsed with enormous losses.
