The tour ended last week but he has remained in Glbralter where his wife will join him Saturday for a two-day private reunion. Here in Salinas, California. 50 per cent of all the lettuce consumed in the country is grown. Right now in the winter season, lettuce is being shipped from Arizona and New Mexico. But here. thousands of acres have already been seed with lettuce. Soon green leaves will appear and "the man with the hoe"wiIl take over to thin the rows so that the lettuce will "head up." This in the only hand operation in the entire industry. Then the lettuce will be har- vested by machines preceded by pickers and trimmers; loaded by a following crew and packed into cartons. 2 dozen heads each; then through vacuum coolers and into refrigerated cars on route the country over.
