June 5.-Mlllion- alres were made in the space of a few moments this afternoon through a world-wide network of sweepstakes which all depended on the outcome of the Derby. ' ~ ’ ~ " The famous Calcutta sweepstake alone was worth $4,500,000 to the holders of the lucky tickets, which coat about $5. It will probably be several days before the money actu- ally is delivered, however, on account of the necessity of undergoing cer- tain formalities. Altogether, more than 810,000,000 in sweepstakes alone passed on the Derby. The Baltic exchange in Lon- don sponsored a $400,000 sweepstake. The London Stock Exchange sold Derby tickets aggregating 8300.000, and the Liverpool Cotton Exchange had a ‘$250,000 sweepstake. Many other smaller sweepstakes were oper- ated privately by large city business firms. 4 Some of those who drew horses disposed of a portion of their chances for ready cash before the race, thus insuring a profit. .
