Two articles of especial interest to those concerned in the developmentof Canadian literature appear in the June number of the Canadian Magazine. One of these articles from the pen of Professor Ii. E Hornlng, deals with A Decade of Cana.~ dian Prose; the other, by Mr. Duncan C. Scott, treats of A Decade of Canadian Poetry. Together they form a valuable study of Canadian literary work and pro- gress between 1890 and 1900. - Gilbert Parker comes first under review as the most noted Canadian writer of fiction, and nine or ten of his volumes are touched upon, Next comes C. G. D. Roberts, the most productive of Canadian Writers, who began with pcetry and is new doing excellent work in prose. Ernest Seton Tnompson, W. A. Fraser, Ralph Connor and William McLennan are mentioned as having done good Work in tlciion during the past ten years. Among women prose writers Miss Mcllwraith. Miss Wood, Miss Dougall, Miss Lant, Mrs. Harrison, Mrs. Cotes, Blanche Mac- Donell and Mrs. Jean Bluet also receive notice for their recent contributions to Canadian notion. In the Decade of Canadian Poetry Mr. Scott deals with more names that are familiar to the ordinary reader-Charles G. D. Roberts, Arch_ibald Lampman, W. ber of singers of lesser note. Altogether, he tells us about fifty books of verse have been given to the world byCanadion poets within the past ten years, but. he finds that only a slight impression has been produced Using popular in one of its least hackney- ed mea.nings,_we must confess that there with the Canadian people." or abroad. A ae...__ uss_~ ¥' W. Campbell. Dr. Drummond, and a num-' number. In the United States the best ‘°"°fk “nd 9° th* ."‘Z“h opinions,” Mr. Scott writes. But he adds: Mr. Borden. leader of the Opposition. is to be bequested in Halitaron J une llth. -1 In the latest number of the P. E. I- Magazine Judge Warburton makes a further plea for consolidating our schools. by combining three, four or more 111120 One and conveying to and from the central school the children who reside at a dis- tance. The systein originated in Concord, Massachusetts some years ago and has been extended throuilh thin' SWW *md largely throughout New England. It has also gained .~i permanent foothold ln the Western States. The’ result has been better teachers and a much higher class of schools. The pupils like the system and ii finrl~ :rem-ral favor among parents and teacheis. Its rapid excensiogn affords evidence of its merits. Judge Warburton argues forcibly that PrinceEdward Island is beiier c-iiidiiioned for the working of t-he system than the other Provinces by reason of iwing more ‘thickly populated. We would be pleased to see the experi- ment triei of thus. grouping five or six schools in one in some favorable locality. Among other claims put forward for the Concord system is that in many cases the cost of tuition is actually reduced. i _ . I \ Ei; ‘v\, - It has been wittily said of the martyrs that they were people who were cannon- aded while they lived and were canon- ized when they were dead. The same thing might be said of many a woman, who has been caunonaded b ceusures and criticisms while she lived and can- onized as a saint after death. Husbands don’t mean to be small and selfish. But they can't understand the sufferings which come with debilitating drains, irregularity, inflammation, or ul- ceration of the sensitive female organs. Thousands of happy women pay trib- ute to the wonderful change in their lives effected by the use of Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription. It is not a cure- all. It has a specific purpose, in the cur~ ing of diseases pecu iar to women. It cures these diseases perfectly. _ Sick women can consult Dr. Pierce free by letter. Each letter is treated as a sacred confidence, privately read and promptly answered. All answers are in .plain envelopes. Address Dt. R. V. °erce, Buffa o, N. Y. “My health is much better since I have been usin Dr. Pierce’s medicines," writes Mrs. Cora Broois, of Martin, Franklin Co., Ga. “After haying a miscarriage in 1895, I sufered with a pain in my left side and a lingering cough which §r_evv_ worse and worse.
