In supply on Tuesday last Mr. Lefurgey brought upthe matter of the proposed branch railway from the Cape Traverse branch to Tryon. lion. Mr. Emmerson stated that he had received petitions for branch lines in almost every section of the Island. l\Ir.I.efurgey believed it would pay the Government to build this branch, which would interest a populous district with many local industries. He also protested against the recent advance in freight rates as most unfair to the island people. Ile pointed out that. taking grain for export as a standard. the Island was placed at a serious disadvantage. The rate from Montreal to St. John, T35 miles or to Halifax, 83;' miles was il cents per l00 pounds, while from Tignish to St- John, 4;? miles, t-he raw is2ii cents and from Tignish to Halifax the rate is Zi cents for 309 miles. and from Tiizniah to Sydney, 38] miles, the rate is2ll cents. “How are the people of Prince Edward Island,” asked Mr. Lefurgey, “to get their pro- ducts across, or to compete with rates such as these-s nine cent rate for nearly athousand miles andaztlceut rate for Ill() to 4(1) miles! Hon. Mr. Emmerson replied that the rates had been increased very slightly, and that it was absolutely necessary. He asked Mr. Lefurgey to name another freight tariff as low as that in Prince Edward Island. They were makingfcapital expenditures and were giving a better service, he said. Mr. Le- furgey denied that the scr- vice was better. Mr. Emmerson proceeded that the patrons of the road must be content to contribute some little proportion of the cost of maintenance and operation. Mr. Lefurgey said we must have a rate that would permit our products to coni- petc in the marketsof thc] world with the products of other countries. We are under the great disadvantage of three short hsuls, and thc government should shoulder the difference between what we are called tapay and what would be a _just rate. To this the Minister replied that. perhaps the government may do this, but hc did not think the rnilwny should Mr. Lcfurgey :nude a further plea for the export shippers and then the matter dropped. At an earlier stage of the discussion liir. Emmerson made the important state- ment that there is no prospect. of the Tryon Branch being built this year, and that the whole question of additional branch lines for the Island Railway will have to he dependent on the cost of maln- tcnunce. He proposed making an experi- ment with motor cars, and until it is de~ I Y Y 1 V mr. c'.n-ner. J. M. This will be rather disappointing to those interested in the projected branch- es. Still it is better to be frankly dis- appointing than to hold out delusive hopes. We know now what to expect. The hope for more bmncb lines rests upon the success of the motor cars as a cheaper means of operating than tho steam locomotive affords. But in the mean- time there ls good reason to believe thi' motor cars will demonstrate a large suv- iml. Great interest will be felt. in their introduction and trial here.
