FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1930 l . Why Cite New Glasgow? . The Liberal organ gives front page prominence to a "big parade" of drunks in the police court in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. Since the re- port states that the number vras "the largest in many a day" our contem- porary assumes that New Glasgow has become "wetter" since Govern- ment Control was introduced. Per- laaps it has. We have no compara- tive figures to show progress one way or the other so far as New Glasgow b ‘. But if the former pro- hibition law was administered inl lhat town in such a manner as loll leduce drunk charges in the police hurt, why hasn't our so called "pro- hibition" Government succeeded in achieving a similar satisfactory re- sult in this city? That is the ques- tion. if, on the other hand, increas- ed convictions for drunkenness in Charlottetown is evidence of better law enforcement, as our contempor- ary lately contended to be the case. thy shouldn't it be evidence 0i bet- E: law enforcement in New Clasgovrl We do not know what proportion Hie number of drunks arrested in New Glasgow under Government Control bears to the number ar- I$Zed under Prohibition; but we do know that the number arrested in this Province under the Lea Govern- ‘ment is the largest since the Canada Temperance Act was placed on the statute books. isn't it time the Liberal awoke to the fact that the more evi- dence it adduces in favor of prohibi- tion the more hopelessly incompet- ent it proves its own Government to be? If the law is so good, whylcan- not the Lea Government enforce it? w...‘ mllst it resort to the humiliat- ing expedient of disclaiming respon- sibility for its failureltoudo so? There is now no issue as between govern- ment control and prohibition in this Province. That issue, as the Liberal organ repeatedly stated, has been de- elded. Then why rehash an issue that is dead and buried? The rcal i. ' before the people is the mrnnci‘ in which the Govemment has impin- merited its pledges with prohibition enforcement. Its dcfinit? commitment, as every elector is aware, was that it would give such enforcement as would result in the banishment of the liquor traffic from this Province. For that purpose it was given a mandate to remodel tho Prohibition Act, to appoint a new Commission, to employ as many in- spectors and magistrates as it thought necessary. and generally to use all the power and resources of the Government in whatever man- ner it considered would most effec- ehew achieve the end it had in view. Three years have passed. and What h“ been the result? The result has been absolute failure!
