THB WAR SITUATION.
| Is cannot be denied that the war
'in South Africa has been productive
of some surprises, not all of which
have been of a pleasant character so
far as British participants and specta-
tors of the struggle are concerned.
The very first surprise was that the
Boers instead of fortifying their
frontier and acting upon the defen-
sive, boldly invaded Natal and Cape
Colony, on the south of their border
and laid siege to Mafsking and Kim-
berly on the west. British plans had
been laid for the invasion of the
Transvaal and the Orange State. It
became the 6|-st business of the Brit-
ish forces to hold in check the armies
them of our soil.

almost incredible in the promptness
and unanimity with which *-he entire

not been able to force a single one of

On the other hand they have been

earthworks and from every position
of vantage in whiehtheyfhate chosen
to dght. The Boer has courage, bat
he has learned at Glencoe, at Blends-
lasgte, at Reitfontein,at Ladysmith
and Belmont that the Briton belongs
to a race more masterful thin he. -

who were doubtfu of the issue as be-
tween equal numbers of British sol-
diers and Boers in battle. Since the
Crimean war, now more than forty
years past,the British armies have
