Nutritional Ailments 0i Turkey Puuits (Experimental Farm News) Nutritional ailments caused by vitamin deficiencies should be rei- atlvely unoornrnon in turkey poults brooded on litter covered floors. provided e. well-balanced starter mash i; fed. says 11.1. MacGregor. Dominion Experimental Station, Swift Current, Sack. There are, however, conditions when nutritiou- al ailments do make an appear- ance. Experience has shown that many of the nutritional a.i'i1nents. body deformities and susceptibility to disease which are noted in hali- grown and mature turkeys are a result of an inadequately balanced diet during the weeks immediately following the actual brooding per- iod it is n. serious mistake to as- sumo that the diet of young grow- ing turkeys does not require as much careful planning as it did during the starting period. The re- quirement of rapidly growing young turkeys for proteins, miner- als and vitamins are relatively high and if good sound bodies. free from skeletal deformities are to be de- veloped these dietary factors must be supplied throughout the growing period. Some of the nutritional ailments which may make their appfarancc are: Stervntiml — Many young poults which have been too long without feed, or were weak at hatching time, have difficulty in learning to eat and drink. This can-b: over- cct-ne by spending considerable time with the poults during the first few days to see that they gel every opportunity to loam to mt and drink. Each poulr should be given s. drink and a mouthful c-f feed as it is placed under the hover. Nuan- erous feeders should be scattered about under the hover so that the poults are never very far from feed. Whole flaked rolled oats. finely cropped greens and glass m-ar-bles scattered on the fccd all ‘help to attract attention to it. Keyes type egg case fillers cut in half and well filled with feed can be used for the first few days. Eating Litter ~ Poults occasion- ally got the habit of eating l.ttc'.-, which may fill the digestive system. This can be overeolne by a plentiful supply of feeders and by covering the litter for the first few days with opened-out sacks. Pressure Necrosis-flute ailment is commonly referred to as "Coking up of the Beak." Particles of the starter mash build u-p on both the upper and lower beak making it almost impossible for the pouits to eat Work at the Dominion Ex- perimental Station. Swift Ourrent seals. has indicated that this prob- lem is largely the result of the cereal grain portion of the starter mash being ground too finely. FAY WASHINGTON, April 2B —(AP) —'lue United States Air Force said officially today the flying saucers “are not a joke." But in" the same breath, the Air Force said it is convinced frcm early two years of careful study hat there are "no alarm- ing prooabilitles" in the mysteri- ous aerial manifestations. ' A paper prepared by the intel- iigence division of the Air Ma- teriel command at-Wright-Pat- tea-son Field, Ohio, declares: "Many of the incidents already have answers-meteors. balloons, falling stars, birds in flight, teat- ing devices, em some of ‘them still end in question marks." The paper added that the "cor- rect tagging oi’ the remaining percentage is shill the job of pro- ject ‘Saucer,’ of the intelligence division. The paper, based on the long Air Force study, became available today. It reviews. in detail, many of the hundreds of reports of strange flying discs and other ob- jects. It notes that, directly or in- directly, three persons investigat- ing flying saucer reports have died in aircraft accidents. Two we're killed in the crash of a. plane carrying What’. later proved to be scraps of material used in a hoax. ‘The third. a National Guard pilot flying over Kentucky, pur- sued to a high attitude what he described on his radio as an ob- ject “round like a tear drop" and flying fast and high. ‘His body was found later in the wreckage oi’ his plane. The Air Force de- cided he had collapsed from lack of oxygen and died before his plane crashed to the earth. ‘Ilhe paper said the possibilities that the saucers are forgign air- craft have been considered. The investigators also considered -but dismissed-some other and even less likely possibilities, like this: 1. Visitors from Mars-dismiss- ed because although that planet is believed by some astronomers possibly capable of supporting life. it appears to be relatively desolate and inhospitable. Hence "a Martian race would be more occupied with survival than we are on earth." 2. Visits bv "some sort of strange extra-terrestrial animals." The paner says “many of the ob- jects described acted more like animals than anything else.” But- ihadds, "there are few reliable reoprla of extra-terrestrial anim- als.’ around the eyes. This is believed to be caused by a deficiency of cer- tain vitamin factors. It is seldom a problem in floor brooded pouiis but has besn occasionally noted. Where possible the poults should be ranged out on fresh young green feed, if this is not possible fresh young gTEQn feed should be finely chopped and sprinkled over the mash each day. ' Perosis -— T"his is corrtnncnly known as “slipped tendon". 'l'.'he leg from the hock down is twisted sideways so that the bird is unable to walk properly. There is no cure once the ailment has reached this stage. This nutritional ailment is the result of a combination of a large number of dietary factors and usually does not show up until the birds are 6 to 7 weeks of age A few of the known causes for this ailment are too high ,a phosphorus contentin the starter ration. a dc- ficicncy oi’ manganese and or choline. This oilment is much less common today than it was a. few years ago. In order to reduce the incklcnce oi’ deficiency ailments oi’ turkey poults. it is necessary to feed an adequate diet to the turkey hens which lay the eggs. Good diets for both poulis and breeders should contain two or more cereal grains. fish meal. meat meal, milk powder. soybean oil meal. wheat bran. ground limestone. dried greens. iodised salt, manganese sulphate.
