T tin' ' l THE BIG' QUESTION IN FISTDOM . i ‘ '___ \_- ` BY QUIN HALL "` Next to the outcome of the Shar- key-Stribllng party to be staged at Flamingo Park in Miami next week. the hottest topic in heavyweight cir- cles at the present moment is Jack Dempaey's possible retum to the ring this summer. The Manassa Mauler has been keeping himself talked about, due to the fact he is in on the promotional end of next week’s mauliest below the citrous belt, and also because he'.s been doing a. little work preparatory .fo a comeback when his duties as a. promoter allow him a. little spare time. He has not been hogging the Miami pugillstic publicity, however, and he's satlsiled to be known as a promoter-at least until after snar- koy and Btribling settle their little argument. After that is something else again. It has been rumored that Demp- sey has a lot of his bankroll tied up in the Florida tight venture, _and ii' this is so and the entertainment turns out to be a ilnancial flop, .lack may stage a come-back to try to re- trieve the fortune which will be washed away under such circmll- stances. And even if he makes moncy on the show next week he is also likc- __i_.__ . T crowd and deep down in his heart, now that Tunney has retired, he'd probably again like to wear the crown. The world knows that he tried val- iantly enough to shake it loose from the Tunney brow. Naturally Dempsey wants to see the color ot a. truckload of cart- wheels before he signs on the dotted line. It Tex Rickard had lived, the Dempsey retum doubtless would have been in the bag. But since the pass- ing of Rickard, who was Dempsey‘s pal, theinew management of the Madison Square Garden Corporation, as well as Humbert Fugazy, another New York promoter, seem ready and willing to undertake the staging of a battle which will feature the heavy- socking Dempsey. And, strangely enough, neither the corporation nor’ Fugazy seem to be worrying over the pile of coin that will have to be stacked up before Jack becomes fev- erishly interested. It's a cinch that the plans of the Manassa. Mauler will not be uncorked until after the iistfest in Miami. It is rumbled about that Dempsey prefers to meet Sharkey in case he stages his come-back. He feels that the Boston gob is the class of the present heavy- weights and that a bout between him- JAC K -Yhéseexe lf, 1 Ti-lls summon. ‘by Young Stribling in their Miami quarrel it is likely that the Southern- er will get the Dempsey assignment and Strib would virtually carry the Solid South with him no matter where the bout was staged if he suc- ceeds against the Boston entry next week. Already a prime favorite be- low the Mason-Dixon line, a win io: strlbling next week would make him the biggest thing in the South since Florida had its boom. ,There are a. lot of fans who feel that Dempsey is through. Maybe he is. His legs didn’t seem to be any too strong in his last stand against Tunney in Chicago, and there also was talk about his eyesight failing after that match. But his rooters are legion and he'll always have a large portion of the crowd cheering for him whenever he decides to go to the post. Ten years ago when Dempsey was in his prime he would have gone through the present crop of heavy- weights like water through a sieve. but it must be admitted that ten years is considerable in anybody’s life. The Manassa Mauier of today isn't the same fellow who crashed down -7086 Willard to gain the title at Tc- ledo. But maybe, after all, he has enough left to again reach out and self and the talkative one is the ly to_be seen in action some time this summer. The "Ch0mD" likes W mix it, he likes the plaudiis of the morsel which would attract the big gate. But if Sharkey is bowled over grab the laurels. This Summer doubtless will prove it one way or the other, - L Bearcats, 2 Pusiliera defeated Truro Bearcats 4-2 Referee-James Herrell ICI SPCBTS OFFICIALS Starter-S. P. Doyle. Jndgu-Dr. 1*. C.
