GEORGE sr. famed Legion To Be Stripped Of Its Glamor By RONALD BATCHELOR AMMAN, Jordan (Reuters)-The famed Arab Legion. Jordan's Brit- ish-tralned army, will be stripped of its glamor-and even of its title-under a new program re- vealed Saturday. Defcnce Minister Mohammad Ali Ajiouni disclosed plans to abolish the legion's colorful uniforms and to merge the desert fighters with the Jordan national guard in an expanded modern force under the plain title "Jordan Army." Members of the 35-year-old le- gion will be clothed in western- style khaklelf the project is ap- proved by Klng Hussein. COLORFUL FEATURE GOES This would mean the abolition of the most distinctive feature of the Arab Legion-the colorful red and white ”khaffiya" of Arab head- dress. now worn by all ranks of the legion. In its place. the Jordan soldiers would wear military caps or khaki berets. similar to those worn by Egyptian and Syrian troops. Allouni. a veteran soldier of 03, said in an Interview that propos- als for the reorganization of the Arab legion were supported by Maj.-Gen. All Abu Nuwar. the le- gion'l new commander. Tho Ara'l Legion was built up by Lt.-Gen. Sir John Glubb, who was dismissed by the 20-year-old Jordan monarch last March. Glubb himself proudly wort the khafflya. Allounl said that with the plan- ned expansion of Jordan's armed forces it was considered "more appropriate" to c h a n g e the le- Pbone glon's title to embrace the whole MEN.
