A Maiden. Vain are te common metaphors of song To paint this lovely one ; All language does her wrong In whieh the praise of other maids is sung The misty tenderness of spring, A young dove with its lifted wing, A lity eye its dew is shed, Snow-drops with roses overhead, Clear coral booming ma purple sea, Pure pearis, and sott-carved ivory, A gliding fawn io jasimne shade, A May-il»wer smiling half afraid, An airy cloudlet’s ilee y tress, Pinged with the new my m’s chaste caress, Faint odors of pale mignonette With Twibghe’s languid kisses wet, The Vawn's tirst blushes, and the look That gleams within a mountain brook Ali hint of her, but none express Her nature's perfect loveliaess— Her purity of love and tone, The light of love about her thrown, Her delicate and winsome The chiselled clearness of her face, ‘The sweet repose in which she lives, Unconscious of the j :y she gives; Of all that’s finest, naught but her Can be her clear interpreter. Her beauty is a spirit true, T > ali that is divine in you; A sight of her is a new sense To one in love with innocence. Horatio Ngetsox Powers. oo Binding Graia by Machinery. Mess:s. J. S. Gibbs and C. 8S, Richard- son, of Siideeport. Conn., Sad inventors, exhibited very lately at Sharpe's rifle fae- tory, in that city, a new machine for bind- ing wrain. [his apparatus binds with heavy twine, ail ochers having been failures. There ere many machines which bind with wire, but these have always been o! jeetion- able, from the fact that the wire was hard to loosen; it often becomes mixed with the grain and causes trouble in varius ways. A binder with twine is far preferab'e, but as before said, thyse have so far been fail- ures. The inventior as shown was a com plete success. The machine was driven up and down a long room, the foor being strewn with straw, just as it would hie after being cut in the feild. The machine gath- ered this upinabunch, passed it inside of the twine, and a revolution tied a strony knot and dropped it again to the foor. The bunel-s were made large or small at the pleasure uf the driver, the machine nt having to stop. One hundred bundles have been tied in twelve minutes in the field by this machines, driven by a boy. Ordinarily five men have to follow a reaper and bundle the grain.
