The Cadre, Oct. 7, 1975, page 2 Ban}. Inadeqyate It has long been recogni— zed that the Barn is woeful— ly inadequate as a Student Union Building. The acoust- ics of the place have.long I been re nowned as the worst. on the Island, Souris Legion not excepted. Further the space available is inade— quate for a Pig - which is why most major events take place in the gym, costing the Student Union hundreds of dollars a shot. And if a’ Pig is held in the Barn all other activities must stop. dove A'sr Stu . . \ ’e-‘ditorial macros It is not possible, as an example, to sit in a side room and have a quiet talk while the other students en- gage.in,the mad drunken orgy. "Enough about Pigs. That,, building is inadequate for just about everything else as well. Aside from eating or wasting your money at pin- ball, there is nothing that is supplied by the Barn to do. So most students just sit and talk or maybe play cards. With reference to ' the slogan Concerning P-E.I. . and tourists, it originally said "the Island" which is what every good Islander calls it. You can check the Guardian to see how they word' theirs. V A proper Student Union , Building should have three ‘ or four small common rooms, one large one, a cafeteria, a dance area (which could be made by putting a removeable wall between the last two which would be taken out for pigs), a conference room, a ,day care centre, Student Un- ion offices, a room or rooms containing ping-pong and pool tables, and if the gov- ernment would agree, a loun- a . ge.. The Report on Aims and Objectives has suggested . that the building also con— tain a Faculty Lounge. This‘ definitely would be a poor idea, mainly because there is too much estrangement at that inhibiting factor present between faculty and students. If they were for- ced to use the same facili- ties as students then it would facilitate much more contact between profs and students. At present, if a' student goes into the facul- ty lounge, or a prof into the Barn,s/he is immediately intimidated by a sense of being the only one of a kind in the room. If however, there was a common area, this cool,as»alWays:nr;.~i,_du_g . Imagine, my. surprisewhen, the two hopped along up the- stairs, leaving the two doo— rs of their auto unlocked, with several 8—track tapes on the front seat and other valuables in the back. What would I do? I was seemingly drawn into a tran— ce and forced to steal those tapes, completely against my will of course. Now I feel 3/ I III _ Build in ‘ would be reduced.9And if a ' professor objects to not having a separate area, then that's too damned bad. It is obvious that such a building would be far«beyond the resources of the Student 'Union. Our entire student?» fees would probably not pay the interest on the mortgage. Hence the university would - have to take responsibility for building it and a con— siderable amount of the ree' sponsibility for maintaining' it. This should not be con—» sidered unreasonable; it is standard practice at most,- ‘universities in Canada. Since the Un'versity's own Report on Aims and Ob—- jectives has recommended that this be the top buil— ding priority for' U.P.E.I., Ithe Student Union should im- mediately start pushing the univerSity for it. “If they want to call-it such a re— :diculous‘name as "The Univ- ersity Community_Centre", so be it. But if we really ; start pushing for one now, it is possible that by the time this year's frosh are seni- ors, or at least next year's that we will finally have a decent Student Union Buil— ding. .IJmusune‘theyudidnEt-andu will be—more~oarefulyinstheg future, now knowing that pnn; evention is the best cure.: Any time I can be of further service in teaching crime prevention, I would be plea— sed to do so. v Sincerely, , S.T. Attention Directors Atlantic Police Academy Charlottetown, P.E.I. Dear Sirs; / I feel it my duty, as an honest citizen of the world, to inform you of some per- tinent information concer- those enrolled in your Pol- ice Academy (Russell and Bob directly). It seems quite clear to me that the first step in crime privention is to re- move the incentive to com— mit a crime. When two pros- pective police officers 1e- ave the doors-of their auto 5 unlocked, with many valuab- -1es inside, it makes me won- der if perhaps they wanted these articles stolen all Ialong.
