The third-year law student Robert Sigurdson deliberately collected a parking ticket last spring in order to take the uni- versity to court. Sigurdson believed the uni- versity’s parking regulations were under town. He had charged the Board of Governors lacked authority under Alberta’s Uni- versities Act to issue parking tickets or conduct appeals. In answer to Sigursdon’s charge that the old towing Tules were analogous to unrea- sonable search and seizure, the university has stopped towing or impounding vehicles. It will, however, continue to tow cars that are parked where they shouldn’t be. ‘The university has also dropped its policy of with- holding academic marks of students with outstanding park- ing fines. McKinnon hopes the new tules will make life a little easier for all concerned. “Td like to see parking work in a way that won’t require a lot of enforcement,”’ he said. Every day a different topic was discussed. Monday’s talk centered around “Identity”? and ‘Who we are?” Tuesday’s talk discussed “Gifts within our Community”. Wednesday dealt with the “Challenge for us as Laity to Journey, to Change, and to Grow’”’. And Thursday con- centrated on the “‘Intergration of Roles in our Lives”’. Our days were filled, but the “‘Newfies” didn’t forget the nights. Monday night, the conference was ‘‘Screeched- In’’. Tuesday night was talent night and coffee house. Wed- nesday afternoon and evening were our free time to discover St. John’s for ourselves, A banquet and dance were held on Thursday night. The Newfoundlanders went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Much energy and resources went into the planning of the conference. Their efforts paid off, for it was a most exciting and memorial event. We would like to thank everyone who supported the P.E.I. group. We are eternally grateful to Sister Alma for her encouragement and guidance. The 1987 conference will be held at the University of Ed- monton. The assistant to the C vice- president of finances and ser- vices credited Sigurdson with “getting the ball rolling” on reforms. “Our lawyers were confi- dent’’ the university could de- fend itself against the student, said Frank McKinnon, who drafted the new rules. But when the university’s finances and services portfolio got a new VP, the attitude changed. Sigurdson had claimed that tickets issued by campus pa- trol officers presume guilt. On the new parking ticket, the recipient is advised of the parking regulations, and not told to pay the fine indicated immediately. The ticket also outlines the recipient has the choice of appearing before a committee or paying the fine directly, admitting the infrac- tion. The hearing committee re- places the old appeals com- mittee. No longer will a member of campus security sit on the committee, as accord- ing to the old regulations, a “non-voting resource person.” “T still don’t agree that they have the right to a hearing committee,” said Sigurdson, who believes cases should be heard in traffic court down- Sctober 2, 1986 ECONOMICS President: Mary Beth (MB Beach) MacLean Vice-President: Bobby MacMillan Secretary-Treasurer: Doug MacDonald Economics Society General meeting for any Economic majors and potential majors, Friday, October 3, at 12:30 p.m. in the Economics Lounge, Fourth Floor Main Don’t stand out in the crowd, Join the minority ....
