A REPIITATIUN 0F .30 YEARS IN FUR BUSINESS A pioneer in the iur business in this Province and one who has main- tained a foremost position asjox rancher, buyer and exporter 0i raw iurs is Mr. J. D. Jenkins, oi this city. Mr. Jenkins‘ ‘has been buying Iurs in Charlottetown tor the past thirty years; he has seen the very beginning oi the industry and has personally handled many oi the early skins. Discussing the early phases of the fur business with a Guardian report- er, Mr. Jenkins bald it was curious that among hundrcdso! redioxes bought in the carly days there were no crosses or patches found. He re- calls that in 1910, he purchased 350 rod foxes at an average price oi $3.00. Today's average price for the same quality would be $35.00. In 1910 mink were plentiful here, about 500 being bought at an average price oi $2.00. Today's average price would be $25.00. 15.000 muskrats were purchased in 1910 at an average price of 25 cents. The price. which rose in 1911 to $4.00, declined that fall to 50 cents. The present price is between $1.00 and $2.00. Hr also recalls purchasing a few otters in i011. This fur-bearer ls now extinct in Prince Edward Is- land. the last one being trapped in i912 at Rircrtcn by Mr. l-layter, irhich Drovcd to be a very large dark llo Bay this week.
