Prime Minister R. B. Bennett was appointed a member of this relect committee oi’ 10. largely as a "peace-maker," for in the com- mittee strength is equally divided between the gold and nor-gold countries. The committee is to 1e- port to the main conference steer- ing committee tomorrow aftcmoon, and the "outcome is unknown. But delegates, feeling it was im- possible to bridge‘ the gap, expect- ed to see a decision tomorrow to adjourn the conference at the end of July until some time in the aut- umn. The steering committee today agreed to drop the discussion of tariffs and quotas but failed to reach any decision on the more important queston of whether the‘ conference is to go on with mon- rtary matters. Despite the insist- . ce of the gold men it would be geiess so long as the United ates is opposed to stabilization of currencies. While the British, representatives of the Dominions, the United States and some of the smaller powers want the conference to proceed and accomplish whatever it can, the representatives of the gold coun- tries tonight remained adamant.
