Rather than allow any he fourteen contributors to official X-Files movie ndtrack to see clips from movie so as to get an idea of the songs that they should write, X-Files creator Chris Carter asked them to produce some songs that would fit well into the general theme of the X-Files universe, namely, aranoia and fear. This album as succeeded, against the odds, in accurately reproduc- ing the X-Files theme in music. The various tracks -- begin- ning with Filter’s blistering cover of the Harry Nilsson standard “One”, to tracks taken from the albums of such lead- ing artists as The Cure, Bjérk, and Sarah McLachlan, and ending with two instrumentals, the first an eerie, original track by Oasis’ Noel Gallagher, the second a version of the X-Files theme song performed by The Dust Brothers -- make a sound- track fit not only forthe movie, Arts & Enterainment ll You, too, could become a famous compact WE give YOU the compact YOU give US a review. profitable in the way of free things. Come by UR elmer te it's easy, and but for the series. In, fact, Sting and Aswad’s incongru- ously cheery track “Invisible Sun” is the only track that is at odds with the whole X-Files concept. This soundtrack al- bum is probably one of the best compilations that came out in Canada this year, and is well worth a listen. - Randy McDonald n Machine This isa fantastic album. Completely musical and inno- vative, Morley has a strong female voice that curves its way through ethnic bounda- ries. As perhaps evident in the title, this artist 1s into positivity and change for the better. Subjects that could become sickening are, however, easy to swallow with intelligent lyr- ics and musical integrity. It would be hard to pin- point the style of this album Tracks like “Just like you,” “Slingshots,” and “High-Low” are easily identified as beauti- ful. “Desert Flowers” and “Who Do You Love” are among the fairly “upbeat” songs, though I wouldn’t de- scribe them as light and fun There are a variety of instruments and styles used to form an urban sound that is highly original. The music is laid back, and yet induces me to be creative. This is cer- tainly an interesting achieve- ment for a cd. This album is by far the best I've come across this se- mester so far. - Kristen Patterson Jonatha Brooke is a tal- ented singer/songwriter who looks like Tea Leoni, and some- times sounds like Lisa Loeb, but I cannot compare her mu- sic to anything I have ever heard before. Ok, I lied, I can compare it to the piano por- tions of “Last Innocent Year” to that of my musical endeav- ours when I was 3 years old. This album alsocontains many different musical instruments and uses each of them in the most abstract ways you could ever imagine. Although | have never heard of Jonatha Brooke before, I do however expect to hear her someday on the radio. I feel that this album has just enough of what it takes for her to get some airtime. Once you hear her music a few times, you get hooked and start to replay the catchy chorus’ and beats in your mind. The best song on this album has to be “Because | Told You So.” It'sasong about a thick-headed man who only has feelings when his girlfriend tells him how he should feel. Other catchy songs include “Landmine,” “Annie,” and “Glass Half Empty.” If you like abstract music, give it a try. - Murray Adams Bruce Cockburn You Pay Your Money nd You Take Chances... Lives (Universal Studios) your Not knowing much about Bruce Cockburn’s mu- sic I thought I would give him a try. This is a 6 track CD that was recorded before a live audience at the Barrymore Theatre in Madison, Wiscon- sin, as part of the Charity of Night Tours last year. | don’t know that much about the Canadian singer/songwriter, but one thing I did take home from this disc is that makes you wonder how he can play each note flawlessly. I’m im- pressed As forthe likability of the songs, I enjoyed “Fascist Ar- chitecture,” because of the rhythm of the acoustic guitar and the drums. Other cool songs include “Call it a De- mocracy” and “Stolen Land” although the latter is similar to a U2 tune. There is some great music on this disc, but since it only has six songs, I can’t re- ally recommend it. But, if you can get it for free, legally, go for it. - Murray Adams FC ras gs A Perfect Murder SMA an eet ra 7 Veep Rising #8 Paulie & Primary Colors Ji bp a 7 mi abe Ali —_ JUMBO Za 3: VIDEO ) ad University PO a elim Ly 4.) e eo ee or oe
