Nature's Care of Seed. In some parta of the world, notably in the Malay Archipeligo, Vast quanti ies of vegetable matter are rlways loating about on the sea, saya the Washington Star. Not only are their roots and ften portions of their trunks immersed branching crowns } incline in the same direction and are | which will sins when bathed by the tides. Thus the numer ous currents of the Molucca Sea are charged with seaweedis, intermixed with flowers, fruits, cocoannts, nuts or other palms and even whole trees. The amount of driftwood thrown upon all shores is enormous, Eskimo along the Arctic coast of Alaska depend upon it wholiy for wood supply. Natives of he coral islands of the Pacific get all their stones for tools froin lrifted trees, in which the stones were found imbedded. The carrying of seeds by ocean cur- renta is one of nature’s most interesting metio’s of distributing plants throuzh the wo-i’, Darwin, }who devoted much attention to investigating the matter proved that niany bear immersion in water for 100 days, or even more, and still retain their vi tality. so that when thrown ashore they are ready to sprout. Nota few species green, float it | they have chanced to dry before falling into the stream which carries them to the ocean. For the very purpose of ac complishing this distribution by water, nature has maie the husks of many seeds practically waterproof. Among the familiar objects picked up on the ocean beach are the so-called seabeans. {t is ularly supposed that the plants which a these beans grow in the water. The beans are found in enor- mous quantities on the Florida shore, and in diminishing numbers northward along the Atlantic coast. They are the seeds of pod bearing vines—climbing plants plentiful along the shores of the Caribbean sea. Each pod, resembiing an exaggerated peapod, contains a num ber of seeds. The latter, falling when ripe into the water, are carried by the calf stream around the south end of Florida and up the Atlantic coast [here are three important varieties, one reddish and flat, another more round and gray, and the third much bigger and of a mahozany color. Hog Experiments. Two important experiments with feeding hogs have beenimade. One was at our experiment farm at Ottawa, and the question considered was whetner warm or cold feed is the best. The re sults of the experiment ssemed to show that cooking the food for the hogs was not profitable. In the experiments peas and small grain were fed raw and cold, | and also the same aimount warmed by steam. In Bulletin 22 of the Minnesota station the question of wet or dry feed for hogs has been considered. Hogs are uch greedy creatures that they are in- ‘line 1 to ewallow their food so rapidly hat it is not mixed ee with the saliva. In the case of dry fool this is npossible, but a great deal of their wet eed is thus taken into the stomach. rhe wet feed, however, is so much more ittractive to the hogs that they will eat a great deal more than of dry feed, and | as they digest most of it they gain more off such feed. Where hog feed is cheap it pays the farmer to give them wei feed in abundance rather than dry. But if feed is expensive, and every pound is a loss unless great gain is obtained, a less liberal feeding on partly dry feed | would result more profitably. enacts pocemacenstihananfiemeanenentstae iI can honestly say” says capt Baby the Animals, A. once bonght a lot of cows of B. The Kansas ““armer heard him complain that they did not do well for him, and he gave as his reason that B. had babied them. Exactly. And he is the man that will succeed with cows. Why could not A baby them, too? A. “‘tol:i on himself” when he made that reimark. We doubt not that our friend John Gould babies his cows. Terry babies his potatoes; Greiner makes his garden his pet. That is the way to succeed. But we had rathsr buy cows from a farm where they had not been taken care of quite so well as we propose to do it, ratber than from one where they have been better cared for than we care for them. Cows take kindly to any ad- vance in treatment, but not to povrer treatment than they have been usel to. This is why some make a failure of buy- ing fine blooded stock. The cattle are not as wejl cared for as they have been used to, and they cannot stand neglect or ordinary treatment so well as animals that have never known any other. Buy babied stock if you are ready to ba!-y them a little more yet, and you will be al} right. or The Imperial Flower of Japan. In Japan the chrysanthemum is the na- tional flower—the imperial emblem. For centuries it has been embroidered on the court robes of emperors. Once a year, when the crysanthemum isin full flower, royalty gives « fete in her honor. Invitations are only extended to those of high rank. Upon this fete day the royal gardens are throwu open, and the crysanthemum is queen of the hour.—Ladies’ Home Juurnal ee eee Deafness Caused by Cattarrh. Capt.S. F.
