Palmer July 25- 83 80 40} 10 I2 3 20 425 The above Table shows the amount of coin tition and the number of competitors we think shows an increase over former years and there must be a corree nding increase of the crops grown; we bog oavc to congratulate the soci- at on the success of their encouragement of the growth of this valuable crop._ The cultivation generally we have no hesita- tion in suyin is good and very creditable to the Farmers w ose ields we visited; here and there are some defects which we will endeavor to point out, in doing which we hope we shall not be thought presum tuous and hope our re- marks will be accoptub e to the society. We doubt very much the pro riot of allow- ing Furmers to compete for prizes or Turnips who do not practise a regular rotation of Crop- ing which us for as we could ascertain isnot generally done. We would advise our Brother Farmers to be more careful in Drillin ,—sorno wide, some narrow, and crooked dri is in the some Field cannot coiue within the bounds of good work- innnsbip. ’l‘wo icl came under our vution the one 41 Drills to the Chain the other 38 which was altogether too close in our opin- ion any Drills less than two Feet apart should not be allowed to coin etc. For the different kinds and Quantities of Mn- nures time of sowing &o., reference can be had to the notes kept by us during our inspection. In some Fields near Charlottetown Munuring too lien? was very perceptnble. In our case (where 8 Loads was Plongliod down in the full and_70 Loads put in the Drills in the spring‘) the Turnips shewd the most Luxuriant gruwt in fact a person could ha walk through them but when they were pu ed the bulbs were small coarse and of an ill shape and necks to them from 6 inches to a foot long.- this shows that an over dose of Manure is not commendable the Cultivation of the First and second i-ire Crops is confirmatory 0 these re- marks tom 35 to 50 Loads of well rotten Ma- nure pcr Acre according to the stale of the soil we consider to be amply sullicient and if what -1 I is called stimulating Manure is used to give the sin t ii. vi rous growth at first even a less uuntity will do, one or two cases come under our notice where a small Quantity of‘ slack lime waélput in the Drills and appeared to have an ex out cfcct, we would recommend where the Land is clear and time will allow to plough the Manure in in the fall this rnctico will ‘W the Farmer a chance of ear sowing w ich should be always done if possib e. The kind generall grown is Skirnne ’s and the Quantity of see used in from llb. to 31b. 1' . -- There were but two Fields-of Yellow entered for competition the first was very excellent but we are sorry we cannot report so favourabl of the second the _’I.‘urni s appeared to be mixed between white and y ow ,and.cn uneven Ii ht crop, of course it rests with the society whet er these are entitled to prixos or not. Our opinion seems to ‘prevail with Country Farmers that it is nselobl for them to coin to with Farmers near Charlottetown we thin if the society could give one set of Prizes for the Royalt and one or for the Country there would more satisfaction. There is a rejudioe with some Farmers against the cultivation of Turni s on account, as they consider, of the extra bor and ex- muse but Farmers should consider that the nd should have the same clcansin with any other root cm as with Turnips i this were done as it sliou d be a decided preference must be given to “Turnips.” In our Tour of in- pipection we passed ii gent many Farina where urnips was not to seen, on others were some patches that were a dis race to all rules of Farming if the societycoul reach those Far- mers and induce them to grow Turnips to any thin like perfection. In‘ our opinion they wood do honor to themselves and confer a great benefit on the Country. 0 mode of ascertaining the Amount of the Crop were the some as practiced in former years. _ Glio. I have found this iuethod give ma better crops than twice the quan- tity of manure, oitlicr ploughed is broadcast or cov- ercd in the drills. Our soil is light. and soon parts with the manure applied to it; it is therefore had cconoiuy to give over-doses of manure ;—on such soils. light and frequent dressings will yield much more profitable returns during the rotation than over-doses V at more distant intervals of time. Turnip land must be in fair condition, and of course must receive: moderate dressing; but the great secret, I believe. in raising good crops of Swedes at rucderuto sxpcncc, is in having some stimulating manure close to the used. From my hen-bones alone last winter I collected suf- ficiont lhr 10 drills-—being one-third of as :cro,—und the contents of tho privy during the winter mixed up with sawdust and oat-shelling: furnished suficieni for an core. I mention this to show how, with a little attention, every one can make up sulliciont " home- made gnano" for a good patch of turnips, hoping that our farmers will turn their attention to saving and testing these valuable stimulants. am, Your'obedient Servant. Who that gives a passing glance over the fair earth, with all its array of glories beau- tiful and brief, views not in its thronging multitudes, a world of dreamers? Every- where, for o’er where the muezzin cries the hour of prayer, where the gorgeous rolling car crushes hourly its votaries, or where the traveller bends in mute idolatry of genius over the graves of classic Greece, as well as in our own land, where each priceless mom- ent carries before the everlasting throne, its record of golden privilege, thankfully im- proved, or remorsolessly squandered; in all climes, the dwellers on earth seem as denizens of a slumbering city. Time in its ceaseless rush, bears down before them, empire, and nation, and dynasty, yet they heed it not. W1-apt in reverie, the reverbe- rating crash of falling thrones and towers strikes on their car, but as the distant mur- mur of the sea. They know, that though now, the sounds " of bloc and splendor, revolt-y und wo” may echo from shore to shore of the round globe, yet that on some morning when the sons ofmcn shall go forth as ever to their toil, the clear heavens above them shall melt away, as the dim shadows of dawn, and that where now the quench- less sun pours forth his splendor, a great white throne, the glory of which no eye of flesh may view, shall stand while a clarion blast, swelling “louder yet and yet more dread,” shall pierce the foundations of the hoary earth, and the everlasting hills, and the caves of the solemn sounding sea: and from their depths shall the pale sleepers of ages come forth, to await the word of the Omnipotent. They know, that though now, life may unfold before them as a dream of enchuntmcnt, and the heart tbr-ob joyously in the very consciousness of existence, yet that an hour will come when a grasp, more potent than the tie that binds us all to earth, shall chill the inmost spirit, when the cheek now glowing with hope, shall blanch before the fearful visions of the future, and the shall pass away to enter the shadowy palaces of the city of the dead. They know these things, they live in the clear light of reali- ties, startling and profound, whose immea- surable sweep girds the far shores of eter- nity, and yet, they dream.
