Five yen ago there Madison Avenue, New York, a wealthy resided on Ho was leader in society, and his wife and daughters maintained the dignity e stock-broke named Joseph cal, H NI of the house in good style. The din- ners given were events looked forward to with more tham a passing interest. Picken soon became a prominent mem- ber of the Lotos Club, associating with such men as Fisk, Bennett, Stokes, and others of the Tammany ‘ Ring.’ At | meth W his pers began to be cirenlated that Pieken was living beyond his means, though the dinners were kept up without intermission. The crash finally came on a June morning, and the notes of Picken were dishonored at the First National Bank. Ina perfect frenzy of excitement he hastily gather ed up all the securities and cash he could collect and disappeared. The creditors at once pounced upon his horses, carriages, jewels, &c., and sold them by auction. His wife died heart-broken six months after, and the daughters separated to earn a living as best they could, Carlotta, the young- est, travelel to Europe as companion toa Philadelphia lady, and met her futher in Switzerland last summer. At that time he frequented a gambling house where he once saw a New York detective, and became so alarmed that he left the country, and after an event- ful voyage to England finally took pas sage under an assumed name in & Montreal steamer. When, he landed here he put up at the Windsor and remained there some weeks. His money hal by this time dwindled away, and he soon saw that cheaper quarters would have to be secured. His next move was to a private boarding house No. 53 Bleury street, kept by Mr. Morrison, where he represented himself to be a New York detective in search of some criminals. He was looked upon by the confiding landlord as a perfect gentleman, and when he stated that he was temporarily embarrassed and would be unable to pay his bill for a few weeks, he was told that it would be all right. The draft he expected to receive from Piokerton’s Bureau not being fortheom- ing, the boarding-house man offered to lend hima trifle, which the pseudo de- tective glad 'y accepted. A few days later ho disappeared in the night, forgetting to sattle his little bill. Nothing more was heard of him till his appearance in the police court this morning, charged with being drunk and sleeping in the gutter at the shipping wharf. His clothes presented a filthy look, though traces of having scen better days were upparent in his demeanor to the casual observer. He stated to the Magis— trate that he would at once return to his native city if the court would kindly. overlook his offence. He was allowed to go, and left the dock murmuring greatly anent the ill-luck which would compel him in his old age to'ask assistance from the charitably disposed.—Montreal Star.
