The chemical engine and hook and ladder wagon having arrived the firemen soon had the blaze under control, streams of water being poured lnto the cent- ral part from all angles. At 3 o'clock although greatly abated the fire was still going strong having spread all over the roof of the main ‘building. By this time the main building was badly gutted, the water working downward. loosening the plaster and general- ly spreading destruction in its course. The fire was finally put out about 5.30 p. m. Water was pumped from the river by means of the Sllsby on- glne nnd the City water sprinkler ‘The patients at the first alarm were all ordered out of the bulld- lng but when it was seen that only the central portion was in danger they were afterwards taken back. the women being confined in the east end while the men were put. in the western ward. ' A few of the patients escaped during the confusion, but were cap- tured wlth some trouble. That no loss of life occurred during the fire is indeed remark- able.
