Carleton Siding Swimming And Water Tests A large and successful swimm- ing program came to a close in Carleton Siding when Paul Cud- more and Joan Murphy, Red Cross Supervisors, tested 48 enthusiastic swimmers on August and. Miss Barbara Cronin, Charlotte- town, instructed the group and pre- sented four well trained classes for examination. The program was sponso ed by the local Women's Institute with Mrs. Priscilla Myers acting as chairman. ' An enjoyable picnic lunch was served to the children by the lad- ies of the community. The swimmers pi A d Miss Cronin with an appropriate gift to express their gratitude for her fine work. The examiners presented awards to the following successful candi- dates. Sport Echoes From Prince'Counly There is considerable talk around the Summerside Isthmus these days about having a colored baseball team from Truro play our retired ball tossers. We be- lieve arrangements have not yet been completed and it is reported baseball players are diffic u It people to lure up to the local diamond this year. There should be enough of them to form a team. Ross and Dionne of the Flyers softball team are said to have played a lot of baseball, Don Canning played baseball with Springhill, and after seeing him in softball, we'd make a guess that Don would be an asset to any team formed around here. Then there is a chap by the name of Palmer staying at the Clifton I-Iotel who hails from Dartmouth and would like to play baseball here. The game with Truro is supposed to be played Monday evening. The Crystal Dairy are shaping up as a pretty tough team to take in the Prince County softball loa- gue. They handed the strong RC- AF Flyers two lop-aided trounc- ings, and although the alrforce boys were short one or two of their stars. still the way the dairy man applied the hickory to the horsehide was impressive. Vern Cottrell who pitched so well against the Oland four-man team, didn't seem to bother the red- shirted stickstsrs in the least. Norm Haney of the R.C.A.F'. Lanes however. will have to be reckoned with before the playoffs are finished. Norm who was wilder than that celebrated native of Borneo until recently is showing signs of having his control under control. If this boy keeps putting the ball over the platter. he'll be of speed. and a change up that has the batters swinging before the ball leaves his hand. The fore- going is slightly exaggerated but he makes the boys look plenty foolish when he floats one in after a display of burning speed. The Kinkora Sllverwlngs are not out of contention yet. Getting sonny Stull to help them with the slab work was just about what the doctor ordered. They've got a lot of good hitters. but their pitching. though not bad. has been a little below the average in the league. Marie Peters playing right field for the Capitol Stars in the game against the Airforce Daks Tuesday night performed the rare stunt of throwing a runner out at first from right field no less than twice during the game. Both times she played it shallow and was Susie on the spot to stop a hard ground- er and beat the runner to the bag. Bay State Pat is the talk of all harness racing enthusiasts in sum- merlide right now. This horse was acquired by Mr. Andrew Perry snt of the club in Miss Mary MacDonald.
