Island Community Theatre to Present New Voices Island audiences will have an opportunity to view the award-winning one-act plays from the 1986 ‘‘New Voices’’ Playwriting competition when the ICT Performance Group presents the three plays in an evening entitled ‘‘New Voices Onstage’. The presentation will run for five nights, Oct. 28 through Nov. 1 with the cur- tain at 8 p.m. at the MacKenzie Theatre. Announcement of the per- formance was made by. Ron Irving, artistic director of ICT who added that his organiza- tion has been looking forward to producing these plays,-. particularly because of the public interest in the work generated by the competition. J.J. Steinfield, who has been successful in a number of literary competitions over the last few years, is represented by ‘‘The Heirloom’’ directed by Mr. Irving, a play ex- ploring the relationship be- tween three people, two of whom share a haunting and horrifying past. ‘Drinking The Ocean’’ is a strange comic Offering by Davie Moses, who will be directing his own script. In order to relieve their fear and boredom, two men hiding in a motel room turn the place, and themselves, upside down. Michael Hennessey, another previous winner for ‘‘The Trial of Minnie McGee’’, has written a poignant story about the growing friendship of two women each battling different afflictions in ‘‘Maggie Hanni- gan’s War’? which will be ‘directed by Norman Osborne. ICT instituted. the New Voices Playwriting Competi- tion four years ago to en- courage the development of local plays. Last year seven- teen new plays were entered in the competition, the highest ‘ number to date. The weather came through for us and at the end of the day, there was a three way tie for first among Kesti Eamantis, Mark MacLeod and Steven Birt, but Mark had the top overall score. This year a bowling tourna- ment was held at the Silverado Bowling Lanes. Bob O’Rourke grabbed top individual bowler. The team of Larry Docherty, Phil Muise, Bill Banks and Brian Howard won team honours. Top female was Jackie Coulson.
