Mowtreal, Jan. $.—A daring burglary was by three men at the residence of Miss Elizabeth Orkney early yesterday morning. Only two persons were inthe house at the time, Mise Ork ney, who sleeps on the second floor, aod a hired man, who ele ps down stairs. The fimiliar with tbe committed } burglars were evidentiy prewises, a8 they immediately made their | way to the room in which Mise Orkney, | who is quife an elderly lady, was sleeping. | They dia not take any pains not to disturb | ber, but lit the gas aod eet aboat ransack - ing the room. Miss Orkney wae quickly aroused, but one of the intrudera threaten— ed ber, and she was obliged to wetch the | depredations without uttering a sound. | Atter having thorongaly overbauled | thin zs and eecuring $60 in cash anda } large quantity of jewelerv, including a gold watch, the whole valued at $300, | they made off the way they had come. Lhe police have since arrested three men on euspicion, New York, Jan. 9.—Bradé¢treet’s on Saturday reported: The year opens with a tone of confidence pervading nearly all branches, with encouraging activity in the iron trade, aresumptiou of works by many thousands of iudustrial emp!oyees in the western glass industry, a larg-ly reduced volume of business failures as compared with corresponding periods iu proceding years, and a general outlock certainly uot inferior to any previous year at this time. LYistributive trade bas naturally been rather slow, pending stocktaking and the returo of salesmen wo the field. While the volume otdistributive business is no larger, induse trial activity is a*pecial featare unconfised to any one rection, especial'y noticeable in the weet, the resumption afer the holi- days has been general and encouraging in the extreme. Sales of southern iron are large, Lovisana sugar crop returns bave been very satisfactory, nine—tenthe of the Florida orange crop was gathered before the frost, and cotton is steady. Wool has opened up actively at eastern markets, and lower prices for cotton goods have stimu - ated the demand. The wage reductions at New England cotton mills have been very generally accepted. The jewelery trade has been encouraged by the small number of failures in that line. Preparations for a large Alaska trade are making on the Pac:fic Coast, and need: d raine are repor:- ed in California. Prices have shown im- portant changes, and steadiness is a lead~ log feature. en GS I enn CABE OF LAYING HENS, One of the best articles we have teen op the subject of laying bens was written for Farm Poultry under the head: ‘* Why Don’t They Lay?” by John H. Rebinson. Passing over the most common rules and sugges'ions, the portion which seems most new and important was the explana tion wby hene estopped iaying euddenly after laying a few eggs and when, accord ing tothe usual understanding of euch things, they should centivue until they finished the litter. ltis shown that the bigh'y brei hen is Jargely an art fizal production the same as the modern dairy cow, and that the reproductive organs have been stimulated and develop d far be- | yond the:r natural condition and that they are very sensitive toall changes. Aay disturbing influence whether it relates to the food, comfort or contentment of the fowls is telt and shewn most quickiy by the organ which are devewped — the faithest from the na ural estate. There are many favorable conditions besides pedigree required to geta six mouths’ o'd pullet to Javing in cold weather, and if any ope of these conditions is interferad with, e*g production ceases when there i: no change in the appearance of the fowl). A cold storm, wet grovuds in the vards, unpalatable focd or even a change to pew quarters equally comfortable will havea disturbing effect on the nervous system of the fowl aod the development of.eggs will cease. Pullets should be put into their winter quarters before it is time will be no later change to disturb them Care and a constant study of iheir wants i@ worth more than any patent food. - = = we : One of our seven first prises taken at the Provincial Exhibition was for the Sovereign Flavoring Extracts.
