_ny The Cadre, February 24, 1976, pagea9 mere wasga little girl and she had a little curl 'ght in the middle of her forehead 7o M [alloy Place md when she was good she was very ver good md when she was bad she was horrid. ' We think this is a very pod description of this" war's Panther Hockey Club, md we had a clear demon— nration of their great Skill as well as their fiustration this week. On hesday night against the Munt Allison Mounties they motted the opposition two pals, then fought back to fie it up at the end 06 me first period. The sec- md stanza, the two teams waded goals,_but in the mird period our boys were mld scoreless while the hunties potted three in: hss than five minutes and w emerged victors by a $3 score. Lennie Kelly mored two and Doug Mac— ban the other. We may if five been hampered in the mird by heavy going, as me Forum's iceaflooding quipment was out of ore hr and the teams played m snowy ice. We wondered Wat they would have done, fl overtime had been playe M & thought they might ‘ MVe to substitute skis hr skates. On Thursday’ fight against Les fast— wating-Aigles Bleu from R de Moncton the Panthers boked pretty tame until “w middle of the second Period when, trailing by » 1‘3, they erupted for four wals.in 3 minutes and 48 Seconds & really looked i like the team we still tifink they are. Final 9.. ,more was 7+6 and brought mm league record to 7' “d 9. Now THAT isn't go0d enough to make the ’ plaYOffs. Our goal scorezs' m this game were D'Arcy MurPhy, Terry Devineg Dan— N ‘W Murphy while Carl Train— or and Joe Filippone had tW0 each. (watch that Welling...it is correct!) nus game ended the Pan— ther career of Dave Murna- ghan,George Matthews, and D'Arcy Murphy. We cer;e” tainly wish them well for they have provided many hours of entertainment during their stay with n _ us. Lennie Kelly, for Icollecting the most points in the season's three— star selections was awar- ded the Pondaroaa Cup prior to the game, while Wilfrid MacDonald recieved the GEntleman Jim trophy and their check for $100 for being chosen, by the players themselves, as the "Rookie of the Year". It must have been a hard choice to make, for the rookies this year were .a most\impressive lot, and if all who are on :3 this year's team return next year we have great hope for the next sea— son. John Neville, the man with all the figures in his head, has supplied us with a lot of statise tics & we think such a study must drive Jack Kane crazy. Poor Jack, he can't score goals, he can only tell people how. WE are struck by the fact that, although we won but 7 & lost 9 and scored but 80 goals against 86, we outshot our opponents on an average of 38.1 ag— ainst 35.2 for our opponents. Throw Out the 60—30 margin by which Moncton outshot us in one' game & the figures become even more amazing. We'll repeat that our adversa- ries' goalkeepers al— ways seem to think that they're Tretiak. In Pantherette bas— , ketball the girls drop- ped their fifial game of the year to the Xettes by a 62—42 margin after trailing at the half by = 22—31. Linda Campbell was our high scorer and this marked our final game, because of graduation for Janet Trainor, Mary Bradley, & Sandra Duns- ford. They will be mis— sed and we_wish them all the best. The Panther Basket— ball team played a su— perlative game in out— scoring St. F.X. in a match, which decided the final playoff spot. It .was the kind of game we ‘really enjoy. As the Pan— thers enjoyed a 53—28 ' margin in the first half and never let up in their102—67 win. LOudest cheer of the af— ternoon went to rookie Colin MacAdam when his basket made the century mark. We think that it was the best game we' have seen a Panther team’ play & graduating Art Laffin again led the team with 29 points & gradua— ting Jamie Ballem again played an outstanding game. We hate to see them go. By this win we'll go into the playoffs & will open against St. Mary's in the Halifax Forum next Friday night at 7:00. We were asked if the Student union will be willing to sponsor a bus. Wri— ting this on Sunday night, we'll have to advise that we'll look into the possibility & we'll find out the cost and have it on CIMN, we feel that great congratulations must go to Gary Heald & his players for their steady improvement over the sea— son...we believe that to— day's game was the best exhibition of basketball that we have seen a UPEI team perform. As they are now reaching their peak, we think that neither the Panthers nor their sup: porters expect that, as high as they are rated nationally, the St. Ma- ry's team is a Shoo—in next Friday night. Cer— tainly a trip to Hali— fax appears attractive for next weekend. Thére will be two basketball ‘games on Friday night and two Saturday after“ noon. Two hockey games on Saturday night & the final on Sunday after— noon. That is a lot of action.
