FURTHER PARTICULARS—THE PROGRESS OF THE FIRE—ENGINES PROMPTLY ON THE SPOT—NOBLE EFFORTS OF THR TOWNS- MEN. [From our own Correspondent. | SuMMERSIDE, Feb. 21. To-day we were visited with the greatest fire ever known in thistown. At 1 o'clock it was found that the store of Messrs. Wright Bros., Water Street, was on fire. The alarm was promptly given, and notwith- standing the severe snow-storm raging at the time, the fire engines were soon on the spot, and every effort made to confine the fire tothe building in which it had originated ; but without success. The fire read rapidly, and soon the stores of John eKenzie, James A. Sharp and C. B. Saund ers, were a mass of ruins. The Clifton was considered to be in danger, and to save it an attempt was made to pull down the old Post Oftice building, which proved unsuc- cessful. By this time the police station had caught, taking with it Walter Dougan’s dwelling house. Here the conflagration was checked, but not without a hard fight. To much praise cannot be given to those who had charge of the engines, to the fire wardens, for the noble efforts they made to stay the fire. It seemed at one time as though their efforts would prove unavailing, and that considerably more property would be destroyed. The buildings burned were fright Bros., dry goods store, John MeKenzie’s clothing store, and McKay's : * ? Commercial House; James A. Sharpe's warehouse; ©. 3B. Saunders’ _ store, H. C. Green’s house (old Post Office), Po- lice Station, and Walter Dougan’s dwelling house. The loss will be considerable, as very little property was saved and that ina damaged condition. Besides his stock, Mr. Sharp lost 3,000 bushels of oats. A severe snowstorm set in on Thursday night and continued all day Friday. The streets are completely blocked up with snow, and it is with difficulty a person can get along. No foreign mails have been received here since Monday last. ———- -—7o Try our Climax Ice Creeper—the best ever invented. Satisfaction guaranteed, or money refunded.—W. R. [oN THE PATH OF FRANK CARVELI, | Hush ! o'er the church asolemn stillness falls ! God’s priest breathes forth those words which Love Divine Endues with deep mysterious power, and calls The Lord of Heaven to His altar-shrine. Hark ! now the ‘‘ Agnus Dei” sweet ascends And pleading hails the awful Presence there ; Each worshipper in deep devotion bends Before his God in rapt adoring prayer. A few short hours—and one who bowed the head At that High Feast in lowly faith and fear, Hath heard his summons—and his spirit fled To join the worship of another sphere. While in his heart still dwelt that mystic light Of holy thoughts, which Christ’s sweet altar throws, Like Samuel, in ‘‘ the watches of the night,” He heard God’s voice, and at the call arose. Ah, touching scene! when as the twilight shade Began to mantle on earth’s chill white face, We stood beside thy snow-girt grave, and Jaid Thy body in its dark cold resting-place. Shroud-like, the snow spread round and spake of death ; The wind seemed moaning forth a dirgeful wail, But the prayers and Cross uplifted told of faith pale, So young !—O God we cannot know thy ways ! Let child-like faith our guide and teacher be, To tell us e’en when health and youth decays, It must be best since it is done by Thee.
