Sperry — Award is presented this year to the creators of the — German-built Volkswagen. e The Board of Award, commemorating the achieve-__ ments of Dr.‘Elmer A. Sperry, a pioneer in the develop- © ment of the Gyrocompass and founder of the Sperry Gyroscope Company,—deliberates for a year before | its annual choice. The vote for Volkswagen this — year was a unanimous one.‘ The award citaton reads: “... for the development of the Volkswagen which, in concept, engineering de- sign and production, has made available to the world an automobile of smgll size for multiple uses, with unique attributes of universality; of low initial and op- erating costs; of simplicity of design having ease of | maintenance; comfort with adequate performance; and ~ suitable for rural and urban use.” Recipients of the award are Dr. Heinz Nordhoff, director general of the Volkswagenwerk, the late Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, designer, and their co-workers. In 1957 the award went to the developers of Gen- eral Motors Corporation’s Diesel-electric locomotive, who are credited with~helping to revolutionize Ameri- ean railroading. Donald W. Douglas, president of © Douglas Aircraft, won in 1956 for the DC series of air- planes. The 1955 award went to William F. Gibbs for the concept and design of the SS United States, fastest passenger ship in the world.
