That a man does not hear his own voice as all the lest of the world hears it is shown by an interesting experiment described by Dr. L. Laloy in La Nature .of Paris. Says this writer : "If a person records on a phono- graph a few sentences pronounced by himself, together with orders by his friends, and causes the machine to reproduce these at the end of a bricf period, it generally happens that lic easily recognizes his friends voices, but not his own. On the other hand, the friends recognize his voice per- fectly. This aingular fact proves that everyone hears his own voice differ- ently from others. "As is remarked hy Prof. Exner, thc difference mllst lie in the liuulity of the tone. lt must be rcmcmbeced that onc hears his own voice not only through thc air, as do his auditors, blit ~ a- cross thc solid parts situated between the organs of speech and those of hearing. The sound this produced has a dlflerent timbre from that conducted to the ear by the air a- lone; _ ‘ “We may show this as follows: Take the cud of n wooden rod llc- twccu the teeth and pmilliiiilcc ii vowel clhitiniloilsly. Lct thc other cnd be alternately taken betwccn thc teeth and released by another person, who- at the same time stops his cars. The latter will find that every time he seizes thc rod i'n his teeth thc sound becomes .stronger than when it reaches his ear through air ulone, and has n different quality. The experiment may he varied by np- plying a wooden rod to the larynx of the person observed und touching it from time to time to the obser- ver's own larynx. As in the preceed- ing case, it will be found thot its liussagc tlllwlllizli ii solid body alig- incnts the intensity of the sound und niolllticd its quality." LAMP SHADES. A lamp has ilndeiliallly n mil;-li plcnsnnter :ind cozicr glow than the irrcprcssihlc gas or electric light. It is..nlso, as a rillc, mllcli more becom- ing to the average person. A soft glow from a prettily shaded lamp imparts a certain beauty to every woman, however homely. Rose pink is a most flattering color for a.lanip shade, and is warranted to take ten years from a woman's rr-.nl age much more readily than will n Illll course in hair dye and rouge. I-leliotropc and the violet shades are more try- inl: to the average complexion, and green is positively dreadful, ns it is apt to impart a most unhealthy hue to the face. A high central chandelier is always trying to thc eyes and gives a still eflect to even thc coziest rooms; side brnckcts are always most desirable, even when the central lights must be tllrned on a little to give a sutlicient amount of light. Never” have a glas- ing light arranged directly opposite to the most comfortable chairs in thc drawing room, or thc guests will hc half-hlindcd by the light and will fccl awkward alid at a disadvantage. Instead of that place ri pretty lamp oil a table nt one side of the chair, or clsc have a fancy shade of some k°iiid adjusted to protect the victim’s ‘sado ANNOUNCEMENTS. *"‘Zi@t _. ns.; illzi 74g se; iss; iii.; ini; mi “Black Prince" Hose- ° at all the lezldiilg Dry Good Storcs.
